Message from the Chair
From Dr. Catherine Spong:
May is Maternal Mental Health Month.

According to McGovern Medical School, up to 80% of postpartum women report experiencing intermittent periods of tearfulness, worry, irritability, fatigue, or moodiness during the first days after delivery - and "one in seven women experience significant symptoms of depression or anxiety during their pregnancy or in the year following delivery."

In order to support these women, the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium has launched a pilot program called PeriPAN to provide ob/gyns, midwives, pediatricians, family doctors, and mental health care professionals across the state of Texas with free phone consults with psychiatrists who have experience treating pregnant and postpartum patients.
UT Southwestern's Department of Psychiatry is a participant in this program and they are offering our faculty even more resources in addition to these consultations.

The PeriPAN Grand Round CME Series occurs from noon to 1pm every third Tuesday of the month. Here are some upcoming lectures if you'd like to tune in (registration required):
  • May 16 (today): Suicide Risk and Safety Assessment in Perinatal Mental Health
  • June 20: Psychotropic Medication in Breastfeeding and Pregnancy
  • July 18: Psychopharmacology and Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders
  • August 15: Substance Use in the Perinatal and Postpartum Periods
  • September 19: Eating Disorders and Perinatal Mental Health
  • October 17: Perinatal and Postpartum Psychosis
  • November 21: NICU Parent Supports and Considerations
  • December 19: Paternal Mental Health and the Perinatal-Postpartum Period
For more information, check out the PeriPAN general flyer and FAQ sheet.

Incoming Residents Awarded
Dr. Holt Garner: Annelle M. Ahmed, M.D. Women's Health Care Award
Influenced by exceptional teachers at a young age, Dr. Holt Garner developed a passion for learning and service. His initial pull toward business shifted to medicine after working as a volunteer accountant and learning of work being done at partner Parkland Health. Now his sights are set on becoming an Ob/Gyn, with possible additional training in maternal-fetal medicine.

This award honors Dr. Ahmed, an Obstetrics and Gynecology faculty member who died of breast cancer at age 39. The recipient demonstrates exemplary women’s health care and epitomizes the clinician that Dr. Ahmed was – caring, intelligent, and involved in her community.

Dr. Lisa Thiele: Southwestern Gynecologic Assembly Award
In college, Dr. Lisa Thiele spent time shadowing an Ob/Gyn and was entranced by that physician’s work. This experience led her to the same specialty as a career choice, with a focus on advocating for women’s rights.

This award is given annually to an outstanding UT Southwestern Medical School graduate pursuing a career in obstetrics and gynecology.

Research Highlights
News release: Award-winning UT Southwestern/Parkland Health program improves health care for new mothers
Women with chronic hypertension and diabetes who were enrolled in an award-winning program for 12 months after childbirth were more likely to keep follow-up health care visits, which in turn led to improved care, according to initial findings of the program published in The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

“The postpartum period represents a critical opportunity to understand and improve short- and long-term health by serving as a window to future health,” said Dr. David Nelson, Division Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Medical Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Parkland Health, and corresponding author of the study.
“The eMCAP program centers on health equity and has demonstrated improvement in attendance and quality of postpartum care for women living in underserved areas.”
