Message from the Chair
From Dr. Catherine Spong:
Though we are nearing the end of the calendar year, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is hitting its stride for FY23.

As discussed in our monthly faculty and staff meetings, our department has a number of goals and priorities to accomplish between now and August 31, 2023. We have already seen success in many of these areas.

Clinically, we set out to launch eight signature gynecology programs. We are happy to report these will be officially up and running by the end of December. More on that to come!

For research, we aimed to increase support and submission for grants and publications. In order to accomplish this, we hired Nicole Beckley, a Scientific Research Writer, who started with us on October 31.

Our team is growing - both faculty and staff - to better enhance our departmental operations. Last month we congratulated Dr. David Nelson on his new title as Division Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. In March, we will welcome Dr. Joseph Cioffi as Division Chief of General Obstetrics and Gynecology.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to you all for all the things you do - both big and small, recognized and unseen. The above listed successes are just a small portion of the many things we have done and all deserve to be celebrated.

Enjoy your time with family and friends. I am grateful for all the work that you do.

Research Highlights
UTSW researchers find no decrease in preterm births with vaginal progesterone
In 2017, a study by Dr. Nelson and UTSW colleagues concluded that injectable progesterone was ineffective at preventing preterm births in at-risk women. However, the use of vaginal progesterone had not been analyzed in a large study among similar patient populations.

CenterTimes+ Highlights eMCAP Program
The program at Parkland, provided in partnership with UTSW physicians and other caregivers in obstetrics and gynecology, could one day change the way postpartum care is provided, said Dr. Nelson.

“This program replaces the postpartum care model that patients receive, which is really meaningful. Our goal is to continue to grow the program in services and scope.”
