Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) HAPPENING NOW!
Did you make less than $55,000 in 2019? You could be eligible to file your taxes for free!
|
|
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $55,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

CORE Susquehanna Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day
AmeriCorps members spend MLK Day of Service at four local organizations
|

On Monday, January 17, CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps (and CAA's VISTA, Nicole!) went straight to work. The group honored MLK Day by volunteering at By Grace Transitional Home, Selinsgrove REC, Haven Ministries, and The Salvation Army. At each location members were involved in different projects including organization of common areas, shelving food pantry supplies, relationship building with residents, educational instruction to local youth, and serving customers. It was an awesome day with great feedback from members!

Sowing Change Registration is Now Live!
A conference to collaboratively strengthen food security in our region

Join us on Friday, February 21, at Susquehanna University for a day of knowledge sharing and networking as we strive to reduce food insecurity in our region. The Sowing Change conference will feature breakout sessions specialized towards campus and community gardens and food access and distribution programs to build cross collaboration.

Union-Snyder CAA is excited to announce our 11th Annual Family Service Conference for
Thursday, May 14, 2020
, at the Union County Government Center.
Every year, we appreciate spending an entire day with our fellow area service providers to discuss pressing matters facing our community, as reported directly by our community through our triennial Community Needs Assessment. This year, we will be facilitating a new Community Needs Assessment to reevaluate our focus areas moving into 2020-2023.
With this in consideration, we would like to design this year's Conference to provide you with tools to walk away with that will better inform and improve your approach to your work in our community. Let us know what you want to talk about at this year's Conference through

. Using these results, the Conference Committee will invite educated presenters on the top 3-4 topics reported. (For topics not listed in the defined check boxes, please list them in the 'Other' line option.)

Lindig Foundation Keeps the Lights On in Lewisburg
Lindig Lewisburg Foundation awards $3,000 for energy assistance

The Lindig Lewisburg Foundation has awarded CAA with $3,000 towards its 'EmPowering Lewisburg Families' project, which will provide Lewisburg families with assistance and support to resolve an energy or utility crisis. This assistance is essential to families with low income who are served by local energy or utility providers without dedicated customer assistance programs.

Fulton Bank Invests in VITA Program
Fulton Bank provides money, volunteers to grow VITA capacity
|
More than 'just a tax program', CAA's VITA program files eligible household's taxes at no cost to ensure maximum return to families living with low-to-moderate income. For individuals living with limited means, a full tax refund is a significant boost to a family's budget.
This year, our friends at Fulton Bank has invested $1,000 as a program sponsor to ensure the continued growth and success of VITA. Plus, four Fulton Bank staff members will be volunteering for the program directly! Thank you for being such a wonderful community asset.

TLC Expansion Project Complete
Sharon Lutheran & Selinsgrove Area Community Foundation funds provide personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies for families at food distribution programs

Thanks to generous funding from Sharon Lutheran Church's Mission Endowment Fund and the Selinsgrove Area Community Foundation, CAA was able to expand the impact of our in-house The Linen Closet (TLC) service to local Selinsgrove families outside of our agency's traditional services. Personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies were distributed to families benefiting from the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (pictured), Meals 4 Seals, and Shepherd's Pie food distribution in quality, reusable shopping bags. Kits included toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, antibacterial wipes, laundry detergent, and soap. We're grateful for the opportunity to reach more families through this mobile TLC project - thank you!

2020 HHS Poverty Guidelines Released
The 2020 poverty guidelines are in effect as of January 15, 2020

The poverty guidelines (unlike the poverty thresholds) are designated by the year in which they are issued. For instance, the guidelines issued in January 2020 are designated the 2020 poverty guidelines. However, the 2020 HHS poverty guidelines only reflect price changes through calendar year 2019; accordingly, they are approximately equal to the Census Bureau poverty thresholds for calendar year 2019. (The 2019 thresholds are expected to be issued in final form in September 2020; a preliminary version of the 2019 thresholds is now available from the Census Bureau.)
