This month, we sat down for a Q&A with Client Services Coordinator, Mechelle Wesley.
Where are you from originally?
- I was born and raised in Chicago. I grew up on the west side in the North Lawndale area.
Where do you live now?
-
I currently reside in Oak Park. My husband, children, and I moved to Oak Park 12 years ago after the purchase of our home. We enjoy being active members of the vibrant and diverse Oak Park community.
What is your role at IHDA?
- I work in IHDA’s Multifamily Finance Department on the Client Services Team. I work with internal and external partners to assist in getting multifamily developments successfully closed.
When did you start working at IHDA?
-
I started working at IHDA in July 2022. I am excited to celebrate my upcoming one-year anniversary with the Authority next month.
What drew you to IHDA/affordable housing originally?
- I was attracted to IHDA’s mission to provide affordable housing support to those in need. I grew up in Lawndale Gardens, which is a low-income housing development in Chicago. Through personal experience, I understand the necessity and impact of economic programs like those provided at IHDA and the difference they make in the lives of others. Working at IHDA allows me to give back, which feels like a full circle moment.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
-
Prior to working at IHDA I spent many years as a personal banker and the last five years as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant. I find it most rewarding to be able to utilize my finance skills in a role that also aligns with my passion and advocacy for creating more diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities. In this role, I am also able to witness how my contribution helps create housing opportunities for our most vulnerable citizens. It really is the best of both worlds.
What has been your favorite development while working at IHDA?
-
Spring Lake Affordable Senior Residences has been my favorite development thus far. It was the very first deal assigned to me at IHDA and holds a special place with me. The development will provide new and rehabilitated independent living housing for seniors, along with an awesome community space. I learned a lot working on the closing team for Spring Lake and was extremely proud to see this deal close.
