A Summer Adventure: Scoring the Freshest Local Seafood Straight Off the Boat

Summer in Monterey Bay is the perfect time to enjoy one of the freshest and most rewarding food experiences around — buying seafood straight off the boat. Just like stumbling across a roadside farmstand bursting with just-picked produce, there’s something special about the chance to buy fish directly from the fishermen who caught it. If you're lucky enough to live near the bay, or come for a visit, keep an eye out for ‘off-the-boat’ or ‘dock sales’ at our local harbors — typically on Fridays or weekends.

Our Get Hooked Dinner with Colectivo Felix at Madson Wines is coming up, Thursday, July 17th. This is one you won't want to miss, so buy your tickets now!

Join us in the intimate cellar at Madson Wines for an exclusive evening where you'll hear from the local fishing community while Chef Diego Felix creates a spectacular seafood-inspired meal paired perfectly with Madson's exceptional wines. This dinner directly supports the Community Seafood Program, making every bite a meaningful contribution to both our local fishing economy and food security in our community.

A Monthly Digest from

June Highlights: Community, Connection, and Momentum

June was bursting with community-driven goodness. At a time when headlines feel heavy, our local community came through with their presence, heart, and action — showing up big for all three of our events: the May 28th Outstanding in the Field dinner on the Capitola Wharf, our June 3rd pop-up at Other Brother Brewery, and the June 10th Get Hooked Dinner at the Monterey Beach Hotel. These gatherings weren’t just about incredible seafood (though there was plenty of that!). They were about building connections — new friends, renewed partnerships, and a growing wave of support for our local fishing community.

SEASONAL SEAFOOD RECIPE

Chef Diego Felix's Halibut Tiradito

Local halibut is in season right now, with fresh catches available throughout the Monterey Bay area. This recipe, courtesy of Chef Diego Felix of Santa Cruz's Colectivo Felix, draws inspiration from his travels to Peru and Mexico, featuring local halibut paired with Hoja Santa, melon, smoky ancho chile oil, and roasted yams. The dish showcases the versatility of our local catch while incorporating vibrant international flavors.

Use our Local Catch Guide to find the best markets sourcing locally caught rockfish all over Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.

Don't forget to get your tickets to dine with us at Madson Wines Thursday, July 17th, and come taste Chef Felix's incredible creations for yourself!

Thank You to Our Generous Donors

We are extremely grateful for our 2025 Week of Seafood Giving donors and the outpouring of support for this year’s campaign! With 45 gifts, including two matching, we raised $12,890! This will provide our food relief partners with 7,500 more healthy seafood meals while supporting our local fisheries! Thank you to Outstanding in the Field for their $1,500 donation to our Community Seafood Program as a beneficiary of the May 28th dinner on the Capitola wharf. We extend a big thanks to Chef Paul Corsentino and the entire team at the Monterey Beach Hotel for hosting a Get Hooked dinner on June 10th, and to all those who joined to support the Community Seafood Program. With our partners at Regenerative California, we are also thrilled to share that the Future of Blue project secured $50,000 in seed funding from Monterey County! Thank you to the County’s Office of Economic Development and the County Board of Supervisors for reinforcing their commitment to building our region’s blue economy.
