Town-owned beachfront properties declared surplus, company retained to start work

Council, at its May 26 meeting, officially declared town-owned properties at the beachfront as “surplus” to the municipality’s needs in keeping with the town's “Sale of Land Policy.

The declaration is part of the process to redevelop the site.

Council members also approved using a direct sale method to sell the land to a preferred purchaser.

On a related note, council approved retaining Darren Neil and Sons Excavating Inc. for the first phase of building demolition work on beachfront properties, at a cost of $79,390, excluding HST.

In addition, council directed staff to retain a consultant to assess the composition of the two buildings that will comprise the second phase of demolition work.

Weiss donation - May 6 2022.jpg

DONORS The Weiss family recently contributed to the town's arena and library fundraising campaign.

Weiss family donates $15,000 to twin-pad arena and library campaign

A local family with strong ties to the community has given $15,000 to the twin-pad arena and library project.

“As a family with two young children who will be using the library and arena for years to come, we see the value that a new twin-pad arena and library will be to our community, and we want to support our community as it continues to grow,” said Brandon and Melissa Weiss.

The family’s donation will go towards the study rooms in the library and include naming recognition.

The couple noted that Melissa’s family – the Wells – have a rich history in Wasaga Beach. She and Brandon believe a donation is a great way to recognize their family legacy.

“We are hopeful that our donation will encourage other families to contribute to the project,” they said.

Melissa has fond memories of growing up in Wasaga Beach and remembers figure skating at the Wasaga Stars Arena, where her three brothers also played hockey.

As well, her childhood memories involve visiting the Wasaga Beach Public Library, including when it was on 19th Street North.

Brandon has lived in Wasaga Beach since 2001. He was involved as a volunteer with minor hockey for four years, during which time he served as treasurer.

The couple say the new arena and library will play an integral role in community life.

“We are looking forward to seeing our family, extended family, and friends enjoying the new library and arena – playing hockey, learning to skate, and utilizing the community spaces for years to come,” they said.

Mayor Nina Bifolchi, on behalf of council, thanked the couple for their generosity.

“This meaningful gift is greatly appreciated and will touch our community for years to come,” Mayor Bifolchi said.

Project background information

In January 2019, town council identified the twin-pad arena and library project as a priority for this term. The Wasaga Stars Arena, built nearly 50 years ago, is at the end of its lifespan. The library, which opened in 1994, is too small to meet the needs of our growing community. A review, including a community consultation process, determined 544 River Rd. W. as the best site for a new 117,669-square-foot joint-use facility. When the new complex opens in the summer of 2023, it will include two NHL-size ice surfaces, an indoor walking track, a modern library with proper program space and meeting rooms. The town is funding the $59-million investment through reserves, long-term financing, and community donations.

ROTARY HELPS Thanks to the Rotary Club for its generous support of the library and arena project.

Rotary Club contributes $80,000 to twin-pad arena and library project

The Town of Wasaga Beach is pleased to announce that the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach has donated $80,000 to the town’s twin-pad arena and library fundraising campaign.

“We are extremely grateful to the club for this very generous contribution to our project,” Mayor Nina Bifolchi said. “The Rotary Club has a long-established record of supporting important local causes. The club’s investment in our arena and library will touch many lives in the years to come.”

In recognition of the donation, the second floor multipurpose room and the youth space in the library will carry the club’s name.

Mark Winegarden, president of the Rotary Club, said it is an honour for the organization to play a role in the project.

“Literacy and health have been important areas of focus, not only for local Rotarians, but for our International organization. If we can help one person with their learning journey, that is an achievement. If we can help one team of youth experience the great leadership of their coaches, while enjoying the health benefits of team sports, that’s an achievement. The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach is proud to be supporting a project that will serve our community for generations,” Winegarden said.

As someone who played hockey growing up and later coached, Winegarden said he looks forward to the first puck drop in the new arena and then visiting the library, exploring all it will offer.

“It’s easy to focus on the obvious, but as Rotarians we see this as an important gathering place in general,” Winegarden said. “Friendships will be forged, smiles will be shared, lessons learned and we know this will contribute to a healthier, vibrant, proud community."

Carly_s Angels pic 2 May 19 2022 final.jpg

THANKS ANGELS Carly's Angels have stepped up big for the twin-pad arena and library project.

Carly's Angels give $17,000 to twin-pad arena and library

The Town of Wasaga Beach is pleased to announce that Carly’s Angels has donated $17,000 to the town’s twin-pad arena and library fundraising campaign.

In recognition of the donation, the junior change room and eight arena seats will carry the organization’s name.

The local philanthropic group operates in memory of Carly Patterson, who passed away following a battle with cancer in 1998. Carly was the daughter of former mayor Cal Patterson.

Carly’s Angels has a long history of supporting important causes in Wasaga Beach.

“The Carly’s Angels have always had an obligation to fundraise for the needed amenities and causes in the community for almost 25 years,” said spokesperson Debbie Timlock.

Over the years, the group has contributed over $700,000 to many important local projects, plus the Hospital for Sick Kids. This includes the pavilion and gates at the sports park, the RecPlex fundraising campaign, the Wasaga Woods skateboard/BMX park, the food bank, the youth centre, local school programs, defibrillators to local seniors facilities and now the new arena and library.

“This facility is a much needed amenity,” Timlock said. “It will be a great gathering place for everyone to enjoy. We are proud that this space will be used to welcome families and visitors to great events and activities.”

The Angels are looking forward to all the new facility will offer.

“This will be a modern, safe, spacious facility,” said Timlock. “This double-rink is a bonus as ice time is hard to get. The walking track can be enjoyed by all. And the library can hold so many more events and activities for young and old. This is all very exciting.”

The Angels, comprised of 10 women, have all raised families in Wasaga Beach and are proud to be part of the arena and library fundraising campaign.

“We are a group of strong, generous women that believe in Wasaga Beach and in our community, so we are always excited to come together for a cause that will benefit our children. This building will be used and enjoyed by local families for generations and that is the best reason to donate,” Timlock said.

Speaking on behalf of council and staff, Mayor Nina Bifolchi thanked the group for its contribution.

“Carly’s Angels are one of the many great organizations in our community that have done so much to help make Wasaga Beach a better place for everyone. We are so grateful they have chosen to be a part of the twin-pad arena and library project and we thank them for their support,” Bifolchi said.

Opening of park at town hall pic 1.jpg

OPENING MILLS PARK From the Historical Advisory Committee. The park located behind the town hall was officially opened in August 1974. At the same time, a plaque was unveiled by Mayor Clair Robertson, commemorating that the property had been donated by Sarah A. Sage Mills to the people of this community in 1937. The donated property became the site of the Wasaga Beach School, which opened in 1939, closing in 1972. The town purchased the property in 1973, turning it into the municipal offices and the town hall. The park behind the town hall had swings, a teeter-totter and other children’s amenities. There was also a tennis court on the property. The opening was attended by members of council, the public, and a steel band that provided entertainment for the day. The park was known as Mills Park and although the original playground equipment has been replaced by new equipment, the tennis courts are still there and the area is still well used by the community.

Message from Mayor Nina Bifolchi

As we share in The Monthly Report, we recently declared town beachfront properties “surplus” to the municipality’s needs.

This is a procedural step allowing council, when ready, to sell these lands.

Construction of our twin-pad arena and library continues on schedule and on budget. Chris Roos, director of recreation, events and facilities, provides the latest on the project with a video update in this newsletter. These monthly video updates are a great way to stay informed about the progress we are making. Please take a moment to watch.

We continue to receive tremendous financial support for the twin-pad arena and library project. In May alone, we received donations from the Weiss family, the Rotary Club, Carly’s Angels, and the Wasaga and District Builders and Contractors Association. Again, on behalf of council, I thank these contributors for their significant generosity.

Meanwhile, our summer events line-up continues to grow. We recently added two more activities to the schedule. Visit our website for full details. This is going to be another fun summer in Wasaga Beach.

I am proud of our Accessibility Advisory Committee and the work it has done lately. The committee recently spearheaded a radio contest on Max FM to raise awareness about accessibility in our community. They have also produced a series of informative accessibility awareness videos. The first video is included in this newsletter. Watch our social media platforms for future messages.

May was certainly a month for celebrations in Wasaga Beach and we highlight three of these in The Monthly Report: Special Olympian Marlene Mayer won gold at a recent competition, Francis and Kathleen Clark celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, and Willard and Marie Henry marked 60 years together. It was my pleasure to visit with these individuals and bring greetings on behalf of council.

I was also happy to join council members at the grand opening of Wasaga Family Foot and Orthotic Clinic recently. Chiropodists Jacob Cook and Quinn Sallows have taken over the practice from Norman Kew. The clinic is at 587 River Road West, Unit 8.

In closing, mark June 22 on your calendar – that’s when our Seniors Information and Active Living Expo takes place at the RecPlex, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The expo will have more than 60 exhibitors. Thanks to our Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee for all of the work that goes into planning this event.

Thank you and I look forward to updating you again next month.
