We have a number of good news stories to share with you in our latest edition of The Monthly Update.
For example, early in April the Gravenhurst Fire Department received a donation of 90 carbon monoxide alarms that members will distribute to homes and buildings in our community as needed. See the newsletter item about this to learn more.
We also have an item in the newsletter about an upcoming expo dubbed Belonging Without Barriers that our Accessibility Advisory Committee is hosting on May 7. This will be a really informative day. I hope you'll join us at the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre.
And be sure to check out the Vacant Building and Land Bylaw item in the newsletter. We passed the bylaw in April to deal with absentee commercial landlords. As you'll read, the bylaw is only one part of a larger strategy to address some of the issues identified in our community.
And don't miss the item about the significant funding announcement for the Cottage Country Family Health Team. It was my pleasure to attend this special day. On behalf of council and our entire community, I want to thank MPP Graydon Smith for his ongoing support for Gravenhurst.
I want to take a moment now to talk about the high water and flooding that we have seen lately. I know people with waterfront properties have been dealing with this and the town has been doing what it can to help.
Since early March, we've made sandbag resources available at various locations in the community. We have shared this information in the March edition of our newsletter and you will find it in this latest installment as well.
Also, we have published provincial flood information on the town website.
As in past years, we are meeting regularly with Parks Canada representatives for updates regarding the Severn River and with Ministry of Natural Resources staff for updates on other local bodies of water, including Lake Muskoka. These meetings continue. We will advocate for steps that can be taken to avoid future high-water situations.
For safety reasons, I urge residents and visitors to stay clear of areas with high and fast-moving water.
I addressed the flooding as part of my monthly mayor's update at council. You can review what I said on our YouTube channel.
Finally, the town is accepting applications for its annual Gravenhurst High School Bursary. The bursary provides $2,000 to a graduating Gravenhurst High School student to help offset the costs of post-secondary education. Bursary applications are due May 29, so don't delay and apply today. See the item in our newsletter to learn more.
We look forward to sharing more information with you in the next edition.
Until then, please take care.
Heidi Lorenz,
Mayor.
