The Most Important Word

What’s the most important word in any language? For most people, the answer is simple: their name. You might hear variations—someone’s spouse, a faith figure, or a cherished word—but at the heart of human connection is the sound of our own name. Hearing our name signals recognition.

It says, “You matter. I see you.”

That’s why leaders and communicators who remember and use names create instant rapport. I’ve watched my brother do this in his company, Chick-Fil-A,—he made a point of everyone knowing everyone. At one meeting, an employee stood and recited all 300 names in the company. It was astonishing, not because of the feat itself, but because of the message it sent: every person counted. Small moments prove the power of a name. I have an insurance agent who does this beautifully. He peppers conversations with my name—“Pat, what do you think?”—and it makes me feel known and engaged. The simple act of saying a name can shift a conversation from transactional to personal.

If you worry you’re terrible with names, you’re not alone. There are practical tricks that help. Repeat the name soon after you hear it—“Nice to meet you, Russ”—and use it a couple more times in the conversation. Create a mental image tied to the name—Russ the tall, Russ who wears glasses—or a little rhyme: “Russ with the fuss-free style.” These small memory aids turn a fleeting introduction into a lasting connection.

And what if you forget a name? Honesty beats awkward avoidance. I’ve practiced this as a chiropractor with thousands of patients over the years. When a name escapes me and I run into someone at the store, I simply say, “I’m sorry—your name’s slipped my mind. Can you remind me?” People appreciate the humility. It’s better than pretending and losing the moment of connection.Using someone’s name is more than etiquette; it’s an act of recognition that meets a basic human need. Names anchor identity, dignity, and belonging.

When you make the effort to remember and use them, you send a message: I see you, and you matter. Try it today—use someone’s name and notice how the conversation changes. You might be surprised at how much warmth and trust a single word can create.
