Hawk Talk:

The Move to Digital

With the expansion of technology use and application, the mid-1990s gave us the spawning of the commercial internet and the rise of the dot.com era.

Around that time, our Millennial classes began to graduate, from 1995 all the way through 2013, and walked right into the ubiquity of personal computers and smart phones.

But not until Apple introduced the iphone did the personal tech revolution explode, creating the world, and industry, of social media applications.

As a result, our Generation Z graduating classes, from 2014 to present, born and raised with this technology, became known as ‘the Digital Generation’.

We have found that these two Generations are less apt to communicate by email, the medium upon which Hudson Catholic places heavy reliance to engage with our graduates.

We have plans to gravitate to other media to communicate with our alumni where and how they prefer -- on their handheld devices -- including the capability to donate via digital wallets, but we are not yet there and it will be several months more before we get there, for reasons of present limitations in financial and human resources.

In the meantime, we ask ALL graduates to update their personal contact information -- particularly mobile phone numbers -- especially if you prefer to hear from us on your mobile phone.

Message From The Prez

One of the beautiful things that stands out in Catholic education is the concept of humility…that we need to be humble. However, I think that while being humble is important, we sometimes are a bit TOO humble at Hudson Catholic. I believe that God gives us all many talents, some of which we are aware, others that we need to discover and develop. Just as the BTL highlights our graduates, we need to celebrate the incredible accomplishments and talents of our staff and students. Each week, I send a Sunday letter to parents, students and staff. Recently, I have started to highlight noteworthy accomplishments of our family members and I wanted to share some of them with you, as well.

The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC) announced that junior Ijlal Imran has been selected to represent The SFIC and Hudson Catholic at the 2024 Summer Advanced Space Academy Program at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Ijlal is one of only six students in the Archdiocese to receive this honor.

The scholarship award covers the entire tuition, registration fees, one set of Space Camp clothing, transportation to and from Huntsville Airport, and round-trip airfare from Newark Liberty to Huntsville.

The Competitive Cheer World saw two Hawks excel at the prestigious Cheersport Varsity All-Star competition in Atlanta, Georgia.  Cheersport is one of the biggest cheer competitions of the year with about 100,000 people attending. Freshman Lily Forin and her Black Diamonds teammates from East Jersey Elite placed 1st in their division, while Junior Megan Ongaya and her Code Black teammates placed 2nd in theirs.  Well done, ladies!!

Congratulations to senior Michael Torres of Boy Scout Troop 466 of Jersey City who passed his Eagle Scout board of review last night, culminating a 10-year Scouting journey.  Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank.

Hawks certainly fly high!!!

Alumni Spotlight

Leadership, Service, Achievements

(and occasional whimsy)

Raring to go. Nicole Acanto ’21 has received her White Coat at a Felician University (NJ) ceremony, a tradition that recognizes students as they begin the clinical part of their Nursing studies.

Collegiate Hawk Baller William Brown ’18 is a 6’4” Senior with the NJCU Gothic Knights, averaging 11ppg, and is majoring in Exercise Science. He was an excellent Forward for the great 2017-18 Hawk team that won the North Jersey Championship. Coach Nick Mariniello referred to William as “the best teammate he’s ever coached” at that time.

Amen. Keith Howell-Garvin ’14, ordained a Christian Minister and Pastor, has been honored by the City of Jersey City for his service to the Church and Community.

Master Logistician. Christian Spiegel ’13 is a Logistics Manager for General Mills in Geneva, IL, who attended a Historically Black College (HBCU) -- Howard University -- and credits the company’s Black Champions Network for providing a strong support system of role models and the exposure needed to move to the ranks of management. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Logistics, Materials, and Supply Chain Management from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. An 8-year veteran at General Mills, Christian says "I am proud to help lead the Geneva plant through a period of transition as our newest General Mills plant, and I truly love making food the world loves."

What’s in a Name? Ruaidhri Walsh ’10 is a Jersey City Firefighter, member of the FDJC Emerald Society, and a recipient of the Kearny Irish-American Club’s 2021 Irishman of the Year award. Hailing from the tiny hamlet of East Newark, the ‘Red King’ played football for the Hawks and, aptly, for the Red Hawks of Montclair State, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Justice Studies.

Photo synthesis. Terence Brennan ’93. In the last issue, we featured Terry’s acquisition of Joseph’s Florist. His photo catches up in this issue.

That Makes Four Emmy Hawks. Phil Carbonaro ’75 has also received recognition in group effort technical categories for contributions to Emmy Award winners, with the statues going to Producers. For Contributions to Emmy Award Winning Achievements in the category of Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Mini Series, Movie, or Special, Phil received recognition for ‘Dune’ in 2001, as a Digital Matte Artist, and in 2003 for ‘Children of Dune’, as a Blue Eye Effects Digital Artist. He repeated with ‘Lost’ in 2005, as a Matte Painting Artist, for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series.

Oh Those Zany '73 Hawks are at it again! They just can't seem to get enough of reuniting! Here they are at Bowl-a-Rama in Bradley Beach. We better see them at Hawks at the Shore in Belmar this summer! L. to R., Mark Fallon, Carl Gargiulo, Jim Sweeney, Lou Manzo, Tom Borkowski, Tom Mullarney, Mike Finley, and Rich Naviello.

Ten Years After

Fronted by Eduardo Pena '90 in the penguin suit, these 'kids' were students when they helped celebrate our 50th Year Gala. Now alumni, they are ten years older, as is Eduardo! Names of these Hawk students to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org.

If you have a newsworthy item or something from the present or past to share with the Hawk community, drop a note to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org

Rise and Shine

A Classmate’s Remembrance of

Tommy Shine ‘78

(Yes, that was his name, and, boy,

did he shine brightly, indeed!)

Sean Moore ’78 recently posted ‘A Celebration of Tom Shine’ on the Hudson Catholic Regional High School Friends’ Facebook site. Sean began with a statement about three things that made the others better: Jersey City, Hudson Catholic, and Tommy Shine.

“I love Jersey City. Specifically, old-school Jersey City…..because it was populated by wonderful characters, rough around the edges, flawed, imperfect people but, no matter their human frailties, their beautiful heart, soul and character shone through.”

“I love Tom Shine,” Sean went on to say, “Tom was a classmate at Hudson Catholic…..we graduated together in 1978…..Tom loved Hudson Catholic unapologetically…….he loved Hudson Catholic sports…….his sport of choice being Baseball……he would walk around campus doing a hilarious impersonation of [Hall of Fame Basketball and Baseball] Coach Rocky Pope.

I was jealous of Tom’s ability to so openly share his love. Tom was a catcher, BUT, as much as anything, Tom was a cheerleader, and he was a great cheerleader. Those years at Hudson Catholic were heady sports years. Athletic excellence permeated the campus of our young school.”

“Tom Shine [so aptly living up to his surname] shone very brightly at Hudson Catholic and his classmates benefitted tremendously from his presence.”

Tom Shine was about everybody else.

Tom Shine was a sharer of his passion.

Tom Shine was old school Jersey City.

Tom Shine was most of all Hudson Catholic.

I like to think often about the convergence of old school Jersey City, Hudson Catholic, and Tommy Shine.

“Tom led such a wonderful, engaging life. Through that living, he went on to help bring one of the best days of sports celebration ever witnessed by the residents of Hudson County. Tom was working for the New Jersey Devils when they won their first Stanley Cup. Being Tom Shine, he managed to finagle Lord Stanley’s Cup for a day and made the rounds locally with the Stanley Cup in tow. That was his brilliance, taking something he loved and sharing it with everyone and anyone. If you knew Tom, it would not have surprised you.”

“When Tom Shine passed, he left a wonderful legacy that should be celebrated in the things that he loved and shared: Tom Shine, Jersey City, and Hudson Catholic.”

Editor’s note: Tommy Shine passed away suddenly on February 4, 2015. His friends established a non-profit foundation in his memory and, each year, they raise money that is used to provide multiple scholarships to young Hawks. The Tommy Shine Awards are cornerstones of the Hudson Catholic Scholarship Program. Consequently, Tommy continues to walk the halls of the school he loved so much.

You can support these awards in Tommy’s name by attending the June 15th event in his memory.
