Elementary Paint The Plow Contest
In the Spring of 2018, Mayor Pacifico distributed applications for a new program for the elementary schools in the City of Altoona, Paint the Plow. Applications were received and the plow blades were delivered to five elementary schools, four in our district, to participate in the inagural program. The four elementary schools displayed below include Juniata Gap, Juniata, McAuliffe Heights at Irving and Pleasant Valley Elementary. The theme for 2018 is "Showing Altoona's Heritage." The general public can vote for a "Fan Favorite" online by going to Mayor Pacifico's Facebook Page @MayorPacifico. Voting runs through Friday, November 16th.
The Annual Fall Event sponsored by the Logan PTO was spooktacular again this year. The Logan staff attended the event in full costume. The students came to the evening in costume and walked through the spooky halls as the teachers passed out treats. Logan family members voted for their favorite costumes and all proceeds benefit the Helping Hands Project – raising more than $250

Blair County Conservation Visits Pleasant Valley
Suzanne Black
Conservation Educational Specialist, Suzanne Black, visited the Kindergarten classes at Pleasant Valley Elementary School with her special friend, Franklin, a Russian Dwarf Tortoise.

Ms. Black read students the story, "A Long Winter's Nap." This story spoke about different habits of animals in winter. Students learned some animals migrate to other places, some hybernate, and some animals are active during the winter. They also learned about things we can do to help animals during the winter season.
AAJHS Integrated Science
Miss Hill’s Integrated Science students had a "crime scene" investigation to investigate density.

The "crime": someone broke into Miss Hill's classroom and stole expensive laboratory supplies. The suspect left behind a piece of metal pipe that was used to break into the room and pry open a cabinet.

The students applied their knowledge of density to determine the density of the unknown metal to compare to metals found in the three suspects' possessions. The students used evidence to convict the suspect.
