VOL. 66 - September 10th, 2018
“The real essence of art turned out to be not something high up and far off – it was right inside my ordinary daily self – if a musician wants to become a finer artist, he must first become a finer person.” - Dr. Shinichi Suzuki
Hello, Friend!
Welcome to your NEW monthly newsletter from Music Time Academy! I hope that you enjoy this updated format (and forgive me for my tardiness on this "August" newsletter).

You'll find familiar content (news/announcements, student of the month, featured teacher, live teacher performances, concert pick, Project SCL, etc.) mixed in with some new sections that I am very excited to curate & share (practice tips, recent news/education articles, and more to come)! BELINDA'S BACKSTAGE PASS
MAKE MORE MUSIC!
Belinda's Backyard Jams at her Oakland home have been a hit with the community, as students, parents & professional musicians alike come together to make music in a safe, supportive environment. We are excited to bring our version of this experience to Music Time with "Belinda's Backstage Pass" - a weekly community gathering centered upon building confidence in creative expression on ANY instrument!

TIPS WELCOME
"How do you eat an elephant?"

"One bite at a time!"

If you're learning a new song, don't try to learn the whole thing all at once! Learn it one peace at a time. "A piece" can be just one measure or one hand at a time!

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC
Ever wonder what makes music more meaningful to some of us?

High empathizers get more intense pleasure from listening to music in general, as indicated by robust activation of their reward system in the fMRI.

AND WHAT MAKES THIS SO IMPORTANT?

This is HUGE for music education! We humans are motivated by what we find most meaningful. It is absolutely imperative that that our TOP PRIORITY is to nurture a meaningful connection with music BEFORE we expect anyone (of any age) to muster up the motivation to practice an instrument!

As these recent findings illustrate, music becomes meaningful when we empathize with it. Maybe it's time that we focus more on EMPATHY, if we really want to enjoy music. At the very least, we can all stand to stop, collaborate and listen a little more.

PROJECT SCL
ALL ABOUT THAT BASS
Did you ever notice that one of the guitars in a band usually has less strings? In fact, that's not a guitar at all, my friends.

This month we're going back to our roots, featuring the bottom end.
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
John Enriquez
INSTRUMENT: DRUMS
TEACHER: LUNA
AGE: 14
SCHOOL: Livermore High
GRADE: 9th
HOBBIES: Swimming & Cross Country

WHY WE CHOSE JOHN:
John doesn't let the fact that he's legally blind hold him back!

"John is enthusiastic and appreciative, patient and committed" says his instructor, Luna. "He recently joined his school's band playing percussion. He made great progress on reading, and learned and a very complicated pattern for the song he wanted to play! His inner metronome is getting better as well."

Way to go, John! We're happy to recognize your recent hard work and progress by awarding you Student of the Month for August 2018!

FEATURED TEACHER:
Will Norman
"I ’ve always been passionate about education. If someone asked me, 'What are you?' I would say, 'I’m a human being. I am also a musician and I am a teacher.'"

"I care how I spend my time, and I guess I started thinking about how I want to live at a pretty young age. Teaching seems to have a lot of intrinsic value, but the flip side of that is I do feel kind of selfish, because any time I’m teaching, I’m also learning!"
