|
It is my honor to chair the NGO/DPI Executive Committee and co-chair the 67th NGO/DPI

Bruce Knotts, Chair NGO DPI Executive Committee and NGO Conference Co-Chair |
Conference. There may have never been a more important conference at a time when there is a rise of nationalism and a decrease in multi-nationalism. We are faced with critical problems of climate change, unprecedented levels of forced migration, risk of nuclear war, poverty, and oppression.
These problems cannot be solved by nationalistic demagogues. What's required is the United Nations, working to organize multinational cooperation to face global problems. American First, India First, Britain Only, will not solve these problems. In fact, nationalism will only make matters worse, as happened in the 1930s. It is burden sharing and global solutions to global problems that will meet today's critical needs. This is what we will discuss August 22-23. Come join us.
NGO/DPI Conferences have a long history of being the think-tanks that feed into UN processes, which in turn solve global problems. Come think with us as we struggle together to solve the world's most pressing problems. It is only when civil society and governments work together that we have hope for a better future.
See you at the UN August 22-23.

CONFERENCE DRAFT CONCEPT NOTE
|
We the Peoples... Reaffirming Multilateralism and Our Shared Values
22 and 23 August 2018, United Nations Headquarters New York
We the Peoples... with this simple introduction, the United Nations Charter lays out an ambitious and noble mandate, the implementation of which has generated successes and challenges throughout the years. While the need for creating the United Nations after two world wars was stark and widely acknowledged, today there is rising skepticism regarding the value of multilateralism and the effectiveness of UN operations. "We need to assert the value of multilateralism, only global solutions can address global problems," Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said upon taking office.

Statement from Winnie Byanyima, Chair of the 67th United Nations Department of Public Information DPI Non-Governmental Organizations NGO Conference
|
I am honored to serve as Chair of the 67th United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) / Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Conference titled "We the Peoples... Together Finding Global Solutions to Global Problems" to be held on 22 and 23 August 2018 at UN Headquarters in New York.
This annual event has a long history as a unique partnership between the UN and NGOs, and as an opportunity to strengthen that partnership. This year's theme speaks to the heart of multilateralism, and sets out an urgent and important discussion for us in civil society and all those with whom we work. We face increasingly alarming and complex global challenges which require global solutions. It is now vital that we raise our voice.
This conference will be our platform to highlight the critical value of multilateralism, to reaffirm our faith in working together through a multilateral system and to advocate strongly for a just and rules-based global governance system - one that upholds human rights, secures peace in the world and enables sustainable development. Let us speak frankly and advance proposals about the areas that need reform.
I will work with you to ensure our gathering leaves a meaningful legacy, one built from our imagination, creativity and hope, and with the voices of women and young people at the fore. As we embark on the planning, I thank the many NGO volunteers, the NGO/DPI Executive Committee, and of course the UN's Department of Public Information, for the spirit of collaboration and common purpose. Because of this I am energized and confident about what we can achieve.
I invite you all to
register for the conference! Please bring your ideas, energy and rich experiences. Let us foster lively and impactful conversations that keep everyone engaged, and focus on bold solutions to leave no one behind.

Byanyima's fascinating bio at the bottom of the page,

USING THE PAST TO GUIDE THE 67thUN DPI/NGO CONFERENCE
|
As planning begins for the upcoming 67th United Nations DPI/NGO conference in New York City, NGOs can use the next few months to work with the NGO/DPI Executive Committee on conference planning. A strong conference requires broad attendance, effective speakers, and new strategies to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. As the largest gathering of NGOs at the United Nations, the Conference is a valuable venue for partnership building, one that is inclusive of member states and the private sector as well.
The 2018 conference should look back upon UN history, previous DPI/NGO conferences and their achievements.

* Investigations
here and elsewhere show that the
NGO Reporter
, under former Editor Dorrie Weiss, was in its fifth year in 1997. That makes 2018 its 26th consecutive year of publication.
Note: Ms. Weiss later mentored Lester and Patrick, who have been its co-editors for over a decade and now also include Ms. Joan Levy, too!
