LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Colleagues,

I know that this is a difficult and troubling time for all of us, but I also know that challenges occur in life and it is how we handle them that helps us overcome even our fears and stresses. Now is the time to call on the inner strengths that we all have, as well as on our Faith.  I have had some major health challenges in the past that have made me stronger in my Faith as well as in my determination to get the facts about the problem. So I urge you to stay steadfast and to support in prayers and meditations the scientists, doctors, nurses, healthcare workers and everyday workers who bring us the services we need for day-to-day wellbeing, and also to follow the necessary measures that can keep us well.

As Governor Cuomo said today, we are all connected spiritually.  I send blessings to all the NGO community, especially to members of the Executive Committee, our family members, friends and acquaintances. When we have come out of this crisis, I look forward to working with you towards realizing the UN important goals.

BLESSINGS to all be safe and stay well.

Fannie Munlin, President
Global NGO Executive Committee
A Message From
The  Director, Outreach Division
Department of Global Communications
Dear Friends,

In these extraordinary and trying times, I hope that you, our partners in Civil Society, are keeping healthy a nd safe.

I am writing to assure you that while the United Nations building is closed to the public and almost all staff are telecommuting from home, we are working hard to adjust our activities to the new reality and to finding creative ways to maintaining our regular engagement with you, by organizing virtual briefings and more.

As Secretary-General António Guterres said last week, "more than ever before, we need solidarity, hope and the political will to see this crisis through together". Also last week, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) also said that we are not only facing a pandemic, but also an  "infodemic".

And this is why "together" matters. As we wage a war on the Coronavirus, we also need to deal with false information, fake news and those trying to exploit the anxiety over COVID19 to spread fear and xenophobia or to prey on the vulnerable and unsuspecting victims.

This is why the United Nations and the WHO have set up dedicated webpages with science-based and accurate information that aims to provide the best available health and safety guidelines regarding the coronavirus outbreak. The dedicated page on UN.ORG is here:  https://www.un.org/coronavirus and the WHO page is here:  www.who.int

Please use these resources and share with your own networks, colleagues and families. You will find resources on how to protect yourself and others, to fight misinformation, stigma and myths about COVID-19, and to see how the UN - working with women and men like you -is supporting the global response.

Since the pandemic has now impacted every country, we know that all of you have been affected in one way or another. Mandatory closures of businesses, schools and other activities, strained health care systems and calls for social distancing have brought profound changes for all of us. In this period of crisis it is gratifying to see civil society stepping up in different ways to shine a light on and meet the needs of people in your communities.

In order to highlight the work that civil society organizations are doing on the ground, and the value added that they bring to the global response to the pandemic, we want to invite you to share your stories with us. Whatever the area of work of your organization, we believe that our common purpose will lift us during this difficult time, and that we can learn from and build on each other's efforts.  If your organization has been active in identifying or meeting the needs arising from COVID19 in your community, please  follow this link and share your experiences, photos and videos with us so we can highlight your learnings.

These are unprecedented times.  Please know that the United Nations remains open for business, even as we, like you, shift to new platforms and ways of working.  The health and safety of all people and of our shared planet continue to be our main priority.  Together we will overcome these challenges, while protecting and supporting the most vulnerable.

With appreciation and best wishes for your happiness and wellbeing,
Maher Nasser

UN75 - A Global (ONLINE!) Conversation

The UN is marking its 75th anniversary at a time of great disruption for the world, compounded by an unprecedented global health crisis with severe economic and social impacts. Will we emerge stronger and better equipped to work together? Or will distrust and isolation grow further? 2020 must be a year of dialogue, when we come together to discuss our priorities as a human family, and how we can build a better future for all.

Covid-19 is a stark reminder of the need for cooperation across borders, sectors and generations. Our response will determine how fast the world recovers, whether we achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and how well we handle pressing challenges: from the climate crisis to pandemics, inequalities, new forms of violence, and rapid changes in technology and in our population.

But just when we need collective action more than ever, support for global cooperation has been flagging. In many countries, public trust in traditional institutions is in decline and relations between countries have been under strain. Will this pandemic bring the world closer together? Or will it lead to greater mistrust? Global dialogue - and action - is now more urgent than ever.

In January 2020, we launched our global dialogue initiative, and discussions have taken place in all settings, from classrooms to boardrooms, across the world. In order to reach as many people as possible, we have built partnerships with youth, civil society, business and media organisations, and created a  one-minute survey that is quick and easy to complete.
We have always placed strong emphasis on online engagement, through virtual dialogues and social media, and are now increasing these efforts in light of Covid-19. We are also working with our partners to take planned events into the digital space, and find innovative ways to engage audiences in line with WHO guidelines and local health regulations.

It is vital that your voice is heard at this crucial time for the world. Your views, concerns and ideas will be presented to world leaders and senior UN officials at the official commemoration of the 75th Anniversary by the UN General Assembly in September 2020. After September, groups around the world will discuss how best to take forward the priorities and proposals generated.
Each conversation is an opportunity to encourage individuals to take actions in their own lives in line with what they have heard and learned. They can yield insights and evidence that national and international organisations can apply. Findings may inspire new programmes, investments, partnerships and campaigns, among other options. A global platform to illustrate key outcomes of discussions is being developed by the UN75 team.

  • Take our one-minute survey and share it widely: www.un75.online
  • Check out the UN75 toolkit with guidelines on how to join, and inspire conversations and amplify voices through channels and communities for people to talk and be heard. We will be adding more information on online dialogues in the coming days
  • Follow @JoinUN75 and #UN75  on social media (TwitterFacebookInstagram) and add your voice to the testimonials from people who have already taken part
Secretary General Offers A
Message of Solidarity
"This is, above all, a human crisis
that calls for solidarity"

UN secretary-general decries lack of global cooperation to beat pandemic
UN secretary-general decries lack of global cooperation to beat pandemic

19 March 2020 - We are facing a global health crisis unlike any in the 75-year history of the United Nations - one that is spreading human suffering, infecting the global economy and upending people's lives.

A global recession - perhaps of record dimensions - is a near certainty.

The International Labour Organization has just reported that workers around the world could lose as much as 3.4 trillion U.S. dollars in income by the end of this year.

This is, above all, a human crisis that calls for solidarity.

Our human family is stressed and the social fabric is being torn.  People are suffering, sick and scared.
Current responses at the country level will not address the global scale and complexity of the crisis.
This is a moment that demands coordinated, decisive, and innovative policy action from the world's leading economies.   We must recognize that the poorest countries and most vulnerable - especially women - will be the hardest hit.

I welcome the decision by G20 leaders to convene an emergency summit next week to respond to the epic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic - and I look forward to taking part.
My central message is clear:  We are in an unprecedented situation and the normal rules no longer apply.  We cannot resort to the usual tools in such unusual times.

The creativity of the response must match the unique nature of the crisis - and the magnitude of the response must match its scale.

Our world faces a common enemy.  We are at war with a virus.

COVID-19 is killing people, as well as attacking the real economy at its core - trade, supply chains, businesses, jobs.  Entire countries and cities are in lockdown.  Borders are closing.  Companies are struggling to stay in business and families are simply struggling to stay afloat.

In managing this crisis, we also have a unique opportunity.

Done right, we can steer the recovery toward a more sustainable and inclusive path.  But poorly coordinated policies risk locking in -- or even worsening -- already unsustainable inequalities, reversing hard-won development gains and poverty reduction.

COVID 19 : A Perspective on a Pandemic

Introduction
The past few weeks has been a stressful time for the global community as we deal with a siege of magnitude proportions by a virus which has disrupted lives and continues to do so.

In brief "the virus "SARS-CoV-2" and the disease it causes has been named "coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated "COVID-19")."belongs to Coronaviruseswhich belongs large family of viruses that are found common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. 1

Categorization as Pandemic
On March 11 the  World Health Organization declared that the spread of COVID-19 should be characterized as a pandemic. In the words of the WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, "Pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly. It is a word that, if misused, can cause unreasonable fear, or unjustified acceptance that the fight is over, leading to unnecessary suffering and death...We cannot say this loudly enough, or clearly enough, or often enough: all countries can still change the course of this pandemic." 2

This announcement has resulted in widespread panic and fear worldwide. On March 13th according to a press by CNN the number of cases worldwide are 125,000.   More ...

A new normal requires new habits and some creative thinking about your psychological well-being ...
Now that many of us are forced to work remotely full-time, need to take care of young and old family members during working hours, are feeling stuck or isolated, are separated from loved ones, and have reduced options for regular physical exercise and social activities, we must think differently and creatively about ways to keep healthy in mind and body.  Here are some tips and resources

UN2020 - Civil Society Responds to the UNs Anniversary
The UN2020 initiative is dedicated to using the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020 as an opportunity to take stock and strengthen the UN system in partnership with civil society, governments, and the UN supporting people-centered multilateralism.

Strengthening the UN system means improving multilateral relations and structures for global problem-solving.

To this end: we involve the progressive voice of civil society in the conversation about the UN we need to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Why #MultilateralismMatters

At a time when nationalism is on the rise and multilateralism is being called into question by powerful governments, we are faced with an increasing number of global threats that require greater international cooperation across borders, sectors and generations.

What will the future look like if the major trends of climate change, military conflict, and inequality are left unchecked in the absence of global cooperation?

Renewing multilateralism: we need bold collective action more than ever.

REGIONAL NGO COORDINATORS
EXPAND  THEIR  2020 VISON!
With its new name, the Global NGO Executive Committee will give renewed prominence to its Regional NGO Coordinators.  These critical allies represent the Executive Committee in each of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) regions.  Regional NGO Coordinators strengthen our collective NGO global engagement by increasing global awareness of UN programs and research.  Directors also help the Executive Committee to be more effective in its advocacy for DGC associated NGOs in New York.

The Executive Committee welcomes Ebunola Shoda as its new sub-Saharan Africa Regional Coordinator.   Ebunola hopes to develop a new What's App platform, "Think, Talk, Tank" to share best practices among regional NGOs working on the UN SDGs.  Executive Committee Board member, Uwem Robert OTU, will mentor her efforts.  We need additional Regional Coordinators for our other global regions.

We encourage our global NGO partners, particularly those from international associations of regional NGOs to submit applications for our open Regional Coordinator positions.  These will be reviewed on a quarterly basis by the Executive Committee.
  • To apply for a Regional NGO Coordinator position, please review the application information HERE
  • To apply for our Regional Liaison positions, please review the application information HERE.
  • Be sure to read the "Terms of Reference" for the Executive Committee's Regional Coordinators Subcommittee available HERE
The NGO DPI Executive Committee represents international NGOs from around the world at the United Nations.  As we continue our work to advance the UN Sustainable Development
Goals, we are also eager to engage with the UN75 program, the CSW/64 Beijing+25
conference, and many other UN projects.  As NGOs, we must work together to advance these UN goals.

Exhaustive  investigations
demonstrate that an NGO Reporter , under former Editor Dorrie Weiss, was in its fifth year in 1997. That makes 2019 its 27th consecutive year of publication.

Prior to her passing, Ms. Weiss mentored Patrick, and later Dr. Lester Wilson, who became its co-editors for over a decade, assisted in large measure by Joan Levy and Isaac Humphries, for which the editor remains eternally grateful.
