WEFT's Spring 2021 Competition Season
Members of the WEFT competition team at Massy Air Park in Daytona, Florida
The War Eagle Flying Team has been practicing weekly this year with hopes of in-person events, such as the annual NIFA SAFECON Nationals held each June. At these competitions, top competing teams across the country compete against each other in flying, ground, and simulator events. Unfortunately, this year both the regional and national competitions were held remotely; however, WEFT was able to make the best of the situation.

In late April, the War Eagle Flying Team travelled to Daytona, Florida to compete in a three-day exhibition against Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Day one consisted of a series of ground and simulator events, and day two consisted of power-on landings, power-off landings, and a message drop competition. Upon departure from Daytona, the team was able to overfly the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

NIFA SAFECON Nationals 2021 consisted of solely ground events and was conducted in Auburn at the Delta Air Lines Aviation Education Building on May 17 and 18. Team members competed against 28 other schools, and the team is excited to compete in-person for the regional competition this fall. WEFT utilized this opportunity to gather the team once more to celebrate the graduating seniors and departing officers.

Beginning in 2017, Auburn Aviation has competed annually in the Air Race Classic, an annual transcontinental air race for female pilots. The event is typically a multi-day competition with a pre-selected route, consisting of either landing or overflying predetermined points. Due to COVID, this year the Air Race Classic is a one-day derby, where each team creates their own unique route following certain guidelines. This is the first year Auburn Aviation has three teams competing! Teams around the nation have the ability to choose their race day between the dates of June 12 and June 26, and the War Eagle Women are tentatively planning to depart for their derby on June 12.

For the 43rd annual Air Race Classic held in 2019, Auburn Aviation's Orange Team placed first in the collegiate division, second overall, and won the fastest Cessna award. To read more about the 2019 War Eagle Women, click here. Caitlyn Miller from the 2019 Orange Team is returning to the skies with Isabella Velarde representing the 2021 White Team. Sierra Hardwick, also a 2019 racer, is competing this year with Elizabeth Moorman on the Orange Team. Mattie Bohanan and Meg Cooper from the Blue Team are both first time racers and are looking forward to an exciting experience!

In an effort to support the War Eagle Women, a Pep-Rally will be hosted on June 11 at the Auburn University Regional Airport. We invite everyone to attend at 5 p.m. and join Aubie and the Auburn cheerleaders as we wish the racing teams good luck!
