GOOD NEWS FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS IN NEW YORK STATE!

News from the Advocacy Committee

In 2024 IIDA NY and ASID NY (comprised of ASID NY Metro and ASID NY Upstate/Canada East) joined advocacy forces to form the Consortium for Interior Design-NY, in order to better support and advance the profession in our state. The Consortium for Interior Design-NY Team has since hired a lobbying firm, Park Strategies, to tackle aligning New York’s educational requirements with national regulatory norms. Together, we introduced legislation that can align New York’s certification requirements with the standards of the Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ). If passed, it will open doors for more qualified professionals to achieve certification, further unifying and magnifying the profession's presence in the state.

We also have been working to establish and strengthen relationships in order to bring attention to regulatory challenges impacting the profession and ensure that interior design remains a priority for decision-makers. We have met with key stakeholders, including the NY State Education Department’s Board of Interior Design, the Higher Education Committees and Legislative Leaders in the Senate and Assembly, and officials at the NY State Education Department.

And we’ve only just begun! These accomplishments will serve as a springboard for future efforts, including addressing issues like scope of practice, state contracting issues, sales tax on interior design services, and corporate ownership regulations for certified interior designers.

Our takeaway from the past year? Our voice is powerful -- and yours is, too. We hope you’ll consider getting involved as we shape the future of our profession. Please contact your chapter or listed Advocacy contacts below with questions, concerns, or if you would like to volunteer.
