The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. mourns the loss of Mrs. Juanita Abernathy
While we mourn the loss of an impassioned advocate for civil rights and justice, we look at her life as an example of what it means to stand by your convictions and the rights of others. The passing of Mrs. Juanita Abernathy is felt by every member of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. We celebrate her life as a “soldier” in the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. Credited with writing the business plan for the 1955 Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott, she and her husband, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, and Rev. and Mrs. King sat around their kitchen table and laid out the architecture that later became the Civil Rights Movement.
Serving on the boards of Metro Atlanta Rail and Transit Authority (MARTA) and the Fulton County Development Authority, her leadership was an example to women of color that there are no limitations except for the ones we place on ourselves. We offer our condolences to her family and salute her life’s work for positive change.
