Antisemitism: A Community Conversation

Join us March 26 from 3:00-5:00 in Ridley Hall for a conversation about Combating Antisemitism in our community. This conversation will be led by Karen Colbert who is an Educator, Artist and wife of Interim Rabbi of Temple B’nai Shalom, Scott Colbert. There will be a brief presentation followed by a roundtable discussion.

Originally from California, Karen Colbert, a previous winner of “teacher of the year” in San Antonio, Texas, is also a trained creative artist. Karen has fostered a love of art throughout her life; first as a world traveler who has visited museums on 6 of the 7 continents, and then as a docent for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA. Her work teaching the principles of STEAM inspired her to use repurposed materials in her art. This type of art, also known as recycled art, goes beyond the conventional recycling of materials by creating objects that exceed the economic, cultural and social value of the original product. Karen has taught art across the world, including India, and her work has been shown at several civic buildings, pop-up galleries and commercial establishments. Karen has also had a solo exhibition at the Spruill Arts Center and her work can be found in the collections of many art aficionados. Karen’s personal mantra is to “leave things better than how she found them” and her colorful, eclectic work reflects of her love of humanity and the environment. As part of the American Jewish Community, Karen and her husband, Rabbi Scott Colbert frequently meet with international leaders regarding Christian and Jewish relations.

Greene Street Market

The Greene Street Market began in 2010 with an idea, a purpose, a lot of hard work and many prayers. After 12 successful years, we have evolved into a 501(c)3 organization, managed entirely by volunteers, who have given over $350,000 to local organizations in need. Groups such as Boys and Girls Clubs, Manna House, First Stop, Meals on Wheels, Kids to Love and many more have received our gifts. These funds are generated from sponsors, donations and income from our tent/space rental to vendors. Our volunteers give their time and talents year-round to create a special place where all are welcome.

If you enjoy Greene Street Market and what it offers, become a GSM VOLUNTEER by calling Marilyn Evans 256 682 4429. If you prefer to DONATE, send a check (made to GSM) to the church, 208 Eustis, 35801. Your donations will purchase market equipment and repair and replace our tents, tables and chairs. If you are interested in sponsoring a market, contact Pattie Cline 256 651 6497. Most importantly, your support in any capacity benefits our farmers, shoppers and our beloved Huntsville community. This helps strengthen the healthy local food system we have been building together for 12 years.
