The 2019 Nevada Legislative session is in the books, leaving participants exhausted but hopefully with a feeling of accomplishment. As usual, many ideas and bills did not make it through the process. Yet, dozens of bills were approved and are waiting to be signed into law.
 
A couple of business-related bills are particularly relevant to business owners. Please take the time to read the handful of pages pertaining to the new minimum wage requirements for all employers ( AB456 ), as well as the new paid time off requirements for employers with 50 or more employees ( SB312 ). Make sure you are looking at the enrolled versions of both that have been sent to the Governor for signature. It will be worth your while.
 
We will now have roughly 18 months before the heavy lifting begins for the 2021 legislative session to implement and comply with the bills that will become law in Nevada for its residents and business owners.
 
2019 is moving fast and another summer is just around the corner. As we head into this fun and eventful time of year, I want to take a moment to thank you for your support and for the relationship we share. Here’s to a strong second half overflowing with opportunities and optimism. 
Fundamentals: People Part 1

Most business issues are people issues!

Unless you are a one-person business operating at the bottom of an abandoned mine, your company is most likely dependent on people. And whenever two or more people get together, the enterprise will develop a company culture.

What are People?

When we talk about people we are typically talking about the organizational culture:

The values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of an organization. Organizational culture includes an organization's expectations, experiences, philosophy, and values that hold it together, and is expressed in its self-image, inner workings, interactions with the outside world, and future expectations. It is based on shared attitudes, beliefs, customs, and written and unwritten rules that have been developed over time and are considered valid. Also called corporate culture, it's shown in:

  • The ways the organization conducts its business, treats its employees, customers and the wider community
  • The extent to which freedom is allowed in decision making, developing new ideas and personal expression
  • How power and information flow through its hierarchy
  • How committed employees are toward collective objectives.

Culture affects the organization's productivity and performance, and provides guidelines on customer care and service, product quality and safety, attendance and punctuality, and concern for the environment.

It also extends to production-methods, marketing and advertising practices, and to new product creation. Organizational culture is unique for every organization and one of the hardest things to change. (businessdictionary.com)
Step 6: After

In this month’s newsletter, we will focus on the sixth and final step, “After,” in which you successfully enjoy the new life you have created.

“After” is the culmination of a career of hard work, goal setting, strategic planning, preparation, action, temporary setbacks, advancement, achievement and, yes, a little luck. What does it look like? Whatever you want. It could be a retirement in which you travel the world to experience exotic places you’ve only seen in movies and magazines. Or maybe you finally have a chance to tackle those home fixer-upper projects you’ve been putting off for so long. Or sitting down to write that memoir or novel you’ve only dreamt about. Whatever it is, you’ve earned the right to enjoy these opportunities and the resources to make them happen.

But what then? Few people are content to continue in this vein indefinitely. Most find they need a new sense of purpose, whether it’s mentoring young people, giving back to their community or even starting another enterprise. No matter how much you’ve prepared, it’s a sign that the psychological/emotional aspects of “After” may present the biggest challenges of all. As with most things, flexibility and open mindedness are key.

Even the most casual political observers know that government has a fondness for avoiding problems, not solving them. And the bigger the problem, the longer the sidestep. Whether it’s health insurance, social security, immigration or any of the other major issues facing our society today, elected officials tend to put off important decisions until crisis stage and beyond.

This doesn’t work for government. And it certainly doesn’t work for business. The good news is, as leaders of our organizations, we can do something about it. Remember when you were a kid and you got a D on your math midterm? (Or whatever subject it might have been.) Instead of telling your parents about it early and lessening the shock (and punishment), you hid your report card? Or tried to cover it up some other way? What happened? Did it ever work? Of course not. And that’s why you were grounded for two weeks instead of two days.

It’s the same in business. A small problem dealt with immediately will disappear quickly. But if you try to keep it under wraps or kick the can down the road indefinitely, it will become a huge obstacle that’s impossible to ignore and may even put your organization in danger.

Handling it early takes training, courage and the willingness to endure temporary discomfort. But over time, you’ll develop a mindset that allows you to make it a habit. And it sure beats the alternative.
