Ulrich Zwingli
(1484-1531)
|
On this date in 1524, Swiss reformer Ulrich Zwingli married Anna Reinhart for the second time — this time in public. In 1522, Zwingli and ten other priests appealed to the bishop of Constance for permission to marry. When the bishop refused the petition, Zwingli married secretly and, later that year, resigned from the priesthood. Zwingli, a pastor and theologian, based the Reformation on Bible study. In his opinion the Reformation comprised fighting social injustice. More information

Robert Raikes
(1736-1811)
|
On this date in 1811, Robert Raikes, founder of English Sunday schools in 1780, died. Raikes built his Sunday schools not for respectable and well-mannered children of believers, but for (in one woman's description) "multitudes of wretches who, released on that day from employment, spend their day in noise and riot." In four years, 250,000 students were attending the schools, by Raikes's death, 500,000, and by 1831, 1.25 million — a quarter of all the children in the country. More information

“We are here in a world struggling to find its soul, but the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not, cannot, and will not overcome it,” Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry says in his Easter 2023 message. “Jesus lives. He has been raised from the dead. That is the message of Easter, and that is the good news of great tidings.” The festive day of Easter is Sunday, April 9.

Episcopal and Swedish churches sign full communion agreement
During a Liturgy of Thanksgiving in Paris on March 27, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, primate of The Episcopal Church, and Archbishop of Uppsala Martin Modéus, primate of the Church of Sweden, signed a memorandum of understanding, establishing a full-communion relationship between the two churches. “Our churches have been friends for so long [a] time, and this is the day for signing the agreement,” Modéus said at the start of his sermon. It is church and spiritual history, but more importantly, “spiritual future....Every time two or more churches sign agreements or agree theologically, spiritually in any form, I think the angels in heaven rejoice and today we rejoice with them … and we have a lot to do in this world,” he said, referring to the day’s Gospel reading, Matthew 9:35-38. “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.” More information Photo: Jeremy Tackett
