Death of Two Hymn Writers
Did You Know?
Charles Wesley
(1707-1788)
On this date in 1788, Charles Wesley died. An evangelist like his more famous brother, John, he was said to have averaged ten poetic lines a day for 50 years. He wrote 8,989 hymns, ten times the volume composed by the only other candidate, Isaac Watts, who could conceivably claim to be the world's greatest hymn writer. He composed some of the most memorable and lasting hymns of the church including: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling," "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today,"
And yet he is often referred to as the "forgotten Wesley." More information

Dorothy (Dora) Greenwell
(1821-1882)
On this date in 1882, Christian poet and hymn writer Dora Greenwell died. Known for "It was for Me that Jesus Died," and "And Art Thou Come with Us to Dwell," she was a true practical Christian, a great espouser of benevolent and humanitarian causes throughout her life, and a champion of women’s suffrage and education, the welfare of the poor, proper care for the mentally handicapped, and the abolition of the slave trade. Although devout and spiritually-minded, she was a sociable, outgoing woman and a friend of fellow poets such as Christina Rosetti. More information

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry calls for Good Friday Offering to support ministry in Jerusalem and the Middle East
As The Episcopal Church’s Good Friday Offering enters its second century, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry invites bishops, congregations, and supporters—in his annual Lent letter—into “that selfless way of living” demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth on the cross. First gathered in 1922, the initial Good Friday Offering was an intentional response of The Episcopal Church to support Anglican ministries in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East that were impacted by the devastation of World War I, the Spanish flu pandemic, and social and political unrest affecting Armenian Christians, among others throughout that region. A lifeline of hope in times of genuine need in years past, the Good Friday Offering continues to support churches, medical programs, and schools today. Read full announcement and see video here.
