Christ Church Christiana Hundred
Celebrates 175th Anniversary
Circa1960
Christmas bulletin, circa 1940s
On Wednesday, May 3, Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Wilmington, launched celebrations of its 175th anniversary year with a noon eucharist service in its chapel, followed by a luncheon and talk, “Christ Church on the Brandywine” by W. Barksdale Maynard.

Christ Church rector, the Rev. Ruth Beresford, commented: “Our celebrations over the course of the year will honor our past, celebrate the ministry we have in this community, and inspire us for God’s future. In addition to events like Barksdale’s presentation, at our annual meeting we will announce a new ministry partnership with Lutheran Community Services and share the five-year strategic plan developed by a team of our members, supported by consultants from Ministry Architects.”

78 people gathered in the parish house for the anniversary launch event organized by the church’s Elder Ministry, which offers programs bringing support to and fellowship for aging members of the congregation. Celebrations got off to an auspicious start with a delicious luncheon, after which Beresford introduced Maynard, the day’s speaker, not only as a renowned local historian, author, and member of Christ Church, but also as a father who brings his children to church.

Maynard’s slide-illustrated talk was presented with humor and fascinating stories about the history of Christ Church Christiana Hundred which, for its first hundred years, was closely linked with the du Pont company and family. Christ Church is one of four congregations with roots in the Brandywine Manufacturers' Sunday School, built in 1817 on du Pont company land, offering classes in basic education and Christian worship for the Brandywine's mill workers’ children. Read full article here.

This Week in Christian History
Did You Know?
Knights Templar
burned alive
On this date in 1310, in Paris, 54 Knights Templar were burned alive. The Catholic Church created the Templars to protect Holy Land pilgrims from bandits, but the Knights' quick rise in power and wealth made them unpopular. Philip the Fair of France trumped up charges against them of blasphemy and homosexuality to convince Pope Clement to disband the order and persecute its members.

"Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so"
On this date in 1886: Karl Barth, one of the most important theologians of the twentieth century and opponent of theological liberalism and political fascism, was born in Basel, Switzerland. When asked in 1962 (on his one visit to America) how he would summarize the essence of the millions of words he had published, he replied, "Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so."

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Sermon for
The Coronation of King Charles III
Colossians 1:9-17, Luke 4:16-21
"Come Holy Spirit, and fill our hearts with the flame of your love. Amen. We are here to crown a King, and we crown a King to serve. What is given today is for the gain of all. For Jesus Christ announced a Kingdom in which the poor and oppressed are freed from the chains of injustice. The blind see. The bruised and broken-hearted are healed. That Kingdom sets the aims of all righteous government, all authority. And the Kingdom also sets the means of all government and authority. For Jesus doesn’t grasp power or hold onto status. The King of Kings, Jesus Christ, was anointed not to be served, but to serve. He creates the unchangeable law of good authority that with the privilege of power comes the duty to serve. Service is love in action. We see active love in our care for the most vulnerable, the way we nurture and encourage the young, in the conservation of the natural world. We have seen those priorities in the life of duty lived by our King." Read full text of the Archbishop's sermon here
