Hosts 39th Annual B+E+S+T Conference

The Bishops’ Executive Assistants of Province III were delighted to host the 39th Annual Bishops’ Executive Secretaries Conference (B+E+S+T) in Alexandria, Virginia, from May 4–8. After two years of thoughtful planning and collaboration, they were thrilled to welcome 90 “besties” from across the church — including participants traveling from as far away as Alaska and Ecuador.

Twelve of the fourteen Province III bishops joined them during the conference, participating in the Holy Eucharist and connecting with attendees during the much-loved “Miter Mixer,” a series of round table conversations that foster meaningful dialogue and shared learning.

The conference featured an outstanding group of presenters. Highlights included Sally Johnson, Esq., a leading expert on the Church’s Title IV disciplinary system; the Rev. Carrie Combs and Iris DiLeonardo from the General Convention Office; and the Revs. Kristin Krantz and Shirley Smit Graham from the College for Congregational Development. The Rev. Dr. Hillary Raining offered a compelling presentation on the intersection of Christian practice and Indigenous spirituality, while Dr. Sarah Stonesifer Boylan from the Presiding Bishop’s Office led a session on bishops’ transitions.

An excursion to Washington National Cathedral provided a memorable highlight, including guided tours and a special reception at the Virginia Mae Center on the cathedral close.

As conference chair, Kathleen Moore reflected, “It was a true joy to gather with colleagues from across the church for a time of learning, fellowship, and mutual support. The spirit of connection and shared ministry was evident throughout the week, and it was an honor to help bring this community together.”

Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. A federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth occurs on Friday, June 19, in 2026.
