Youth making an impact
at Christ Church, Dover
“I wanted to ensure that my Eagle Scout project was something that would have an impact that could last for generations to enjoy.”

— Derek Sweet
Right: Derek Sweet, an active member of the youth group at Christ Church, Dover, receives recognition of his work from the Rev. Chuck Weiss, during the Sunday service on July 20. The Venerable Patricia Malcolm looks on.
An Eagle Scout project brings life to a labyrinth that had fallen in disrepair at Christ Church in Dover. After 117 cumulative hours, with the assistance of church members and Eagle Scout Troop 903, Derek Sweet saw his vision for the renewed labyrinth at his church come to fruition. The labyrinth, a winding path used for spiritual meditation, had fallen into disrepair, being comprised of stones that had sunken into the ground over time, making sections of the path almost invisible and rendering it unusable. After hours of research, planning, and labor, the path is not only useable and beautiful, but built to be a long-lasting path for the entire community. Derek was glad to provide this service to the church, and hopes it will remain a part of the community for a long time to come. The labyrinth was re-dedicated on Sunday, 20, 2021 during the Sunday service.

A Blessing from Lebanon
and Visual Commentary on Scripture: David and Goliath
At this very difficult time for Lebanon, both with COVID-19 and the dire economic situation, some followers of the Great King came together to sing a blessing. "We are nothing special, He is! Some of the voices are spectacular, some are normal but all sing the love and longing that the Master has for us: He is for you! Our buildings may be closed but the church is very much alive!" You may see the video here or by clicking on the arrow above.
The Old Testament reading for Sunday, June 20, the Third Sunday after Pentecost is from 1 Samuel 17, the story of David and Goliath. The visual commentary on scripture this week includes a plate by an unknown artist from early 7th century Constantinople, Bernini's 17th century marble statue of David, and a stunning tempera panel from the mid-15th century by Pesellino. You may read and see commentary here or by clicking on the photograph above.

The Hybrid Church, What is it? Part 1
When pandemic restrictions were thrust upon all areas of life, many in the Episcopal Church transferred to an online alternative for worshiping to maintain connections and spirituality. But now that restrictions are being lifted, three overriding questions arise: Will churches return solely to in-person worship? Or will churches opt for online only? Or will a hybrid emerge that captures the essence of church and fills many needs? The hybrid church uses both online and in-person worship. An examination of hybrid church evokes various, albeit fundamentally similar, attitudes. Read full article here.
