St. Nicholas Church
Creates and makes their own stained glass church window
| |
| | The people of St. Nicholas Church in Newark are known for their can-do attitude. In 2000 the church redecorating committee decided it was time for St. Nick’s to have stained glass windows to enhance its worship space. Fifteen members of the church set out to learn how to create stained glass windows on their own. Two members had limited experience with stained glass but were by no means experts. They saw God’s hand in how the windows came together, especially since they had to learn this exacting art by hand. Another local church, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Newark, had also undertaken such a project, and a field trip to their church gave the St. Nicholas group the inspiration they needed to begin. Once the project started, several members took classes to learn the basics. Through hard work, perseverance, and a whole lot of prayer, the six panels emerged over time. The panels each have 3 sections, and each panel has a loose theme. The first panel represents Christ the Pascal Lamb. The second panel represents the Law and the Scriptures. Panel three represents the Episcopal Church, with the two following images representing St. Nicholas church specifically, with the anchor and coins of Saint Nicholas, and an old oak tree representing the specific parish. The fourth and fifth panels represent the Holy Spirit, baptism, and the Eucharist. Panel six represents resurrection and the new fire of the Easter Vigil. Creating these stunning panels in-house was a great labor of love for those involved in their construction, and a blessing to all parishioners and visitors to the parish.
