The Episcopal Church in Delaware
supports Delaware Pride Festival

Legislative Mall, Dover
Saturday, October 2, 9am – 5pm

The Episcopal Church in Delaware (ECD) is a sponsor of the Delaware Pride Festival and will be hosting an information table at the festival. Clergy are encouraged to wear clericals, and lay leaders are welcome to wear their home parish/institution shirts, etc.

Also, if you would like to share your parish/institution materials at the table, please mail to Jon Rania, c/o Christ Church Dover, P.O. Box 1374, Dover, DE 19903 no later than Thursday, September 30, 2021.

For more information or to sign up to staff the table, please contact Jon Rania at [email protected] or call 302-734-5731 (work) or 302-245-1881 (cell).

The ECD is a sponsor of this event. Those assisting or attending the festival are welcome to park at Christ Church, 501 S. State Street, Dover in the off-street parking lot. The parish house will be open as a comfort station from 8am-6pm on the day of the festival.
National Hispanic
Heritage Month
September 15 - October15

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. For 2021 events and highlights, click here

Annual Convention to be online only
Update from Bishop Brown

This year's annual convention will now be held entirely online, instead of the hybrid plan that we had hoped would be possible. With the continuing spread of the highly contagious Delta variant and the rise in breakthrough cases, I believe this to be the best and safest decision for everyone involved. It simply isn’t wise to expect clergy, delegates, and the convention team (over a hundred people) to attend an all-day, in-person, indoor event in these conditions. With two months to go before we convene, much work remains to adjust the details of the event. We will announce all convention updates as soon as they are available. Until you hear otherwise, please continue to adhere to the deadlines and procedures as indicated in the Call to Convention.
Calling all young artists!
2021 Christmas Card Contest
I invite all creative girls and boys up to 18 years old to create the Christmas card I will send this December. Whatever kind of visual art you enjoy — drawing, painting, sculpture, mosaic, collage, photography, pottery, you name it — that can be printed on a Christmas card, send it in. I’d love to see what the Holy Spirit sparks in you that can help spread Christmas joy and hope this year.

The scripture text inside the card will be Isaiah 9:6, where the prophet proclaimed, For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Once images of all of the artwork have been received, my wife, Caroline, and I will select one card from each age group (10 and under and 11-18) to be printed. I will publicly unveil the chosen cards (and all entries we receive) at the diocesan convention and in The Net just before Thanksgiving. Of course, the artwork will also be shared online at www.delaware.church.

I hope to get lots of entries from every parish in Delaware! — Bishop Brown
Please submit your artwork entry to [email protected] no later than October 25.

Below are a few guidelines to keep in mind:
  • Please submit your artwork as an attachment in a jpg or pdf format.
  • Please include your name, age, and contact information with your submission.
  • Text and background colors used in card will complement your design. Note: the sample image on the left does not represent color or design of the actual card.
  • If your artwork is designed to cover the entire front of card, please submit with the approximate size/dimension of 5” x 7”, otherwise it can be any dimension variation (no smaller than 3” x 3” please).

150th anniversary of the martyrdom of Bishop John Coleridge Patteson
first bishop of Melanesia
John Coleridge Patteson went to the South Pacific and was made bishop in 1861.The slave-trade was technically illegal there, but the laws were unenforced and slave-raiding was a flourishing business. Patteson was actively engaged in the effort to stamp it out. However, injured men do not always distinguish friends from foes. After slave-raiders had attacked the island of Nakapu, in the Santa Cruz group, Patteson and several companions visited the area. They were assumed to be connected with the raiders, and Patteson's body was floated back to his ship with five hatchet wounds in the chest, one for each native who had been killed in the earlier raid. The death of Bishop Patteson caused an uproar back in England, and stimulated the government there to take firm measures to stamp out slavery and the slave trade in its Pacific territories. It was also the seed of a strong and vigorous Church in Melanesia today. Patteson and his companions died on 20 September 1871. On this date in 1985, the first Farm Aid was held in Champaign, IL and
it has been held every year since
After 36 years, Farm Aid still stands with family farmers. The non-profit has worked over the years to promote a strong, resilient family farm system, and to build a system of agriculture that values family farmers, good food, soil and water, and strong communities. It operates an emergency hotline that offers farmers resources for the challenges they're experiencing, and a fund to help farmers who lose their belongings and crops through natural disasters. Its annual music and food festival celebrates farmers, eaters, and music coming together for change. Since 1985, Farm Aid has raised more than $60 million to help family farmers thrive all over the country while inspiring millions of people to take part in the Good Food Movement. The experience of the past 18 months has reminded us how much we need each other. I’m so glad we can come together again at Farm Aid 2021. When we combine music, family farmers, and good food, we have the power to grow the kind of agriculture that strengthens all of us.— Willie Nelson. More information in video above. Flood Assistance Programs
available in the map area
Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki joined Delaware Governor John Carney and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) to issue an important joint announcement about flood assistance programs for residents impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. “It’s a difficult task to pull lives and properties back together again following natural and unexpected disasters,” said the Mayor. “The past several days have tested the ability of the community and government to come together as quickly as possible to assist affected residents and businesses. We have a great deal of work to do, but the City and State are committed to the tasks and challenges ahead.” Read joint news release here. Information on flood assistance here.
