Green The Church is Honored to Announce!
Calling all concerned clergy, vestries, church administrators, church members,
green advocates, and environmental supporters! All are welcome!
Green The Church is honored to share that the Most Rev. Michael Curry will be presenting at our upcoming virtual four-day national Summit. The Episcopal Church’s Covenant for the Care of Creation includes the pillar of Life-Giving Conservation, which offers practical ways of reducing climate impact and living more humbly and gently on Earth as individuals, households, congregations, institutions, and dioceses. The theme of this year's Green The Church Virtual National Summit, Green Lessons From Black Wall Street, will focus on a call to action for the Black Church as we examine climate solutions that address the need for infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and equity that protect our health, build our wealth, and bring resources back into our communities. Come experience a powerful conference centered on learning, connecting, and networking around environmental and sustainability issues. This four-day summit will include worship services, breakout sessions, panel discussions, networking, and much more.

On this date in 1907, the cornerstone was laid at the National Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, located in Washington, DC, is a Neo-Gothic structure closely modeled on the English Gothic style of the late fourteenth century. Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt and a crowd of more than 20,000, and ended 83 years later when the final finial was placed in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990. It is the seat of both the Presiding Bishop Michael Bruce Curry, and the bishop of the Diocese of WashingtonMariann Edgar Budde. More information about the cathedral here

Cathedral to replace Confederate stained glass with racial justice imagery
The National Cathedral has announced it has chosen artist Kerry James Marshall, renowned for his wide-ranging works depicting African American life, to design new stained-glass windows with racial justice themes to replace a set with Confederate imagery that were removed in 2017. The windows will tell a new and more complete story of the nation's racial history. Poet Elizabeth Alexander will write a poem to be inscribed in stone tablets alongside the windows, overlaying older ones that venerated the lives of Confederate soldiers. The project is expected to be completed by 2023. More information

2021 Christmas Card Contest
I invite all creative girls and boys up to 18 years old to create the Christmas card I will send this December. Whatever kind of visual art you enjoy — drawing, painting, sculpture, mosaic, collage, photography, pottery, you name it — that can be printed on a Christmas card, send it in. I’d love to see what the Holy Spirit sparks in you that can help spread Christmas joy and hope this year.

The scripture text inside the card will be Isaiah 9:6, where the prophet proclaimed, For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Once images of all of the artwork have been received, my wife, Caroline, and I will select one card from each age group (10 and under and 11-18) to be printed. I will publicly unveil the chosen cards (and all entries we receive) at the diocesan convention and in The Net just before Thanksgiving. Of course, the artwork will also be shared online at www.delaware.church.

I hope to get lots of entries from every parish in Delaware! — Bishop Brown
Please submit your artwork entry to [email protected] no later than October 25.

Below are a few guidelines to keep in mind:
  • Please submit your artwork as an attachment in a jpg or pdf format.
  • Please include your name, age, and contact information with your submission.
  • Text and background colors used in card will complement your design. Note: the sample image on the left does not represent color or design of the actual card.
  • If your artwork is designed to cover the entire front of card, please submit with the approximate size/dimension of 5” x 7”, otherwise it can be any dimension variation (no smaller than 3” x 3” please).
