HOLLER & SAUNDERS, LTD.

~ INTRODUCTION ~

HOLLER & SAUNDERS, LTD. was founded in 1979 by Edward Holler and Samuel Saunders, purveyors of Spanish Colonial furniture and decorative arts from Mexico and South America.

After extensive investigation and exploration in Latin America in the pre-Google days they became aware not only of colonial centers in Latin America, but also of colonial trade routes, primarily the Acapulco/Manila galleon trade route that operated between Acapulco Bay and Manila Bay from 1585 to 1820 with once a year round trip voyages. They then began to explore these trade routes which took them to Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese colonies that existed in Asia and realized the influence of these colonies had on the Americas and began finding colonial pieces with an Asian influence.

What started as a hobby by the late Edward Holler collecting prime examples of Mexican Colonial and folk art, he and his partner Samuel Saunders evolved the business into a full blown “look” that encompasses a sumptuous and exuberant expression of maximalism, grandeur, scale, symmetry, and bravado always exposing the finest qualities of their original intention of seeking out the best of Latin American Colonial furniture and decorative arts.

Those interests led them to emphasize Colonial Revival styles as well as pieces of their own design which are produced by master artisans in Mexico and South America. Samuel Saunders carries on the business which has developed into a more minimalistic approach to their original maximalist philosophy.

For over 40 years Holler & Saunders, Ltd. has followed this global colonization of the world, with its indigenous interpretation of European styles introduced into the Americas and Asia looking for examples of decorative art, architectural components and furniture to add to their large collection which can be experienced in Nogales, Arizona on the border with Mexico, and now at the new shopping experience https://hsreserve.com, accessed through https://hollersaunders.com or directly, you are invited to enjoy an exclusive and rare opportunity to look into the Holler & Saunders collection, where you can take a journey through the timeless pieces of furniture and art, travel back in time to see what colonial home décor may have been like, and into the future to “the apotheosis of art and technology… when the past becomes the future… and the future the past…” where you can live with the pieces in the present.

An interview with H&S, LTD. founder Sam Saunders
Since so many people have been spending much more time at home these days, they are getting more of an idea how their house is or is not working for them…. less formal living and living really in a space is the order of the day. I think it is important to create your ultimate refuge, whatever it may be. Even in a contemporary design environment I feel it is important to introduce a few historical elements that will help to ground the look… antique pieces of furniture, a painting, a mirror with period tendencies will add substance and age-old quality to the endeavor… the past becomes the future and the future the past…

Over the past forty years of HOLLER & SAUNDERS, LTD. being in business many design rules have come and gone. The rule of rules is perhaps that there really are no rules, but if we must stick to some guidelines, here go a few of the more lasting ones…these are not demanding rules, not set in cement, they are simply part of the operating system Holler & Saunders has developed. It has worked for us and some of them may work for you.
Top 5 Interior Design Tips
Symmetry - Balance - Axis
Rule number one for HOLLER & SAUNDERS, LTD. has always been symmetry. And believe me, it is of primary importance. It keeps your mind and soul organized and directed and you can find it quite relaxing and comfortable. There will always be situations where symmetry may not work, but balance is still essential in a room. Establishing symmetry in a particular place you can start on the floor, move from the floor up the walls to the ceiling as far as you can vertically and horizontally. This is all stressed with the use of pairs and even multiples of furniture and objects. Having similar elements on both sides of a room, or using symmetrical shapes creates a feeling of comfort and balance in a space. And remember if you can't have symmetry of equal components, you can at least have balance.

Axis is an almost imaginary crosshair in the space to help keep your mind on track.
Scale
Rule number two. You will be surprised at how good large scale makes you feel... even small rooms come to life when large scale components are used and the room will actually seem larger. Once the symmetry is erected, it has to be emphasized to its highest level by the use of large grand exaggerated scale, which clarifies the intended effect. Scale creates the basis for the dramatic, ample, generous and sometimes epic situations that are necessary for layering in the components.
Seven Layers
To achieve nirvana in a finished project, you generally need to apply seven layers of compatibility to build up the ideal situation. This layering not only lends that theatrical atmosphere to the endeavor but should create the optimum of comfort not only to the body but to the psyche and soul as well.

The seven layers can vary from its categories but it's good to think of them as a multiplicity of objects essential to create a rhythmic pattern, a sort of manipulated chaos out of the order, if you will.

These layers could consist of: upholstered furniture, hard surfaces, metallic and ceramic pieces, illumination, paintings, mirrors, and personal pieces to comfort the psyche.
Rhythmic Pattern
Repetition and multiplicity are a great way to pound a certain theme home and have some off the wall fun...
Final Tweaking and Juxtaposition
This is an important rule to master and depends a lot on gut reaction. If something looks wrong in its placement, it probably is. When it's right you just feel a contentment that speaks to you.

Juxtaposition can require lots of moving pieces around. it is sort of a juggling performance or even a chess game in a way. a room may look good on paper but reality and actuality always prevail to make a space look, feel, and work well.
