Greetings!
When I first started to draft this message, "March Madness" (the annual NCAA basketball tournament) was about to begin. Along with millions of others, I was looking forward to the excitement. At the same time, the basketball-related tragedy that occurred in Orange County, California, on January 26 — the crash of the helicopter with 9 people on their way to a basketball game — was on my mind. Mothers, fathers, daughters, and coaches were killed unnecessarily.
Most of us are exposed in some way to this type of horrific incident virtually every day. It can happen to any person, at any stage or age. It's why I try to appreciate the here and now.
We were about to send out this newsletter when the true significance of the coronavirus was announced, which led to the complete alteration of our personal and professional lives, including travel, events, meetings, dining out, entertainment, and more. Last week, "March Sadness" seemed like a more appropriate title for this introduction.
But in the past few days I've felt better. There are so many people stepping up to do the right thing — from checking on seniors who live alone and supporting independent restaurants with takeout dining to business leaders equipping employees to work at home so they can care for and continue to support their family. At Lane & Lane, w
e have also undertaken measures that will ensure that our entire firm, including our support staff and attorneys, are able to continue our work in a manner that is both effective and reduces, as much as possible, the threats posed by the coronavirus. For our clients, opposing lawyers and everyone we interact with outside the firm, nothing will change. The cases and our clients' needs remain our highest priorities.
No one knows when life (and business) will be back to usual, but the ways in which people are helping one another through this challenging time seem like a very bright silver lining to me.
Working together, as the world community that we are, we will all get through these trying times.
If there is anything the Lane & Lane team can do to be helpful to you and your loved ones, please let us know. In the meantime, stay safe and be well.
