Pope Leo XIV recalled the life and legacy of Cardinal in Pectore Iuliu Hossu, a Romanian Greek Catholic bishop, “pastor and martyr of the faith during the communist persecution in Romania,” who was commemorated Monday in the Vatican and who saved thousands of Jews from death during World War II.
“We have gathered today in the Sistine Chapel to commemorate, in the jubilee year dedicated to hope, an apostle of hope: Blessed Cardinal Iuliu Hossu, Greek Catholic bishop of Cluj-Gherla,” said the Holy Father at the beginning of his address at the commemoration ceremony for the cardinal, who died 55 years ago on May 28, 1970.

| | | Ordination to the priesthood of Christ is more than a ritual. It is a covenant, formed in the image of Christ, the New Covenant between God and humanity. The rewards of covenant life are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Charity that reaches beyond comfort. Joy that shines through suffering. Peace that calms anxious hearts. Patience that endures the long wait. Kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — these marks of the Spirit sanctify ministry and bear witness to the living God. A genuine prophet does not proclaim mere words but embodies God’s compassion, denouncing injustice and proclaiming good news without fear. Yet we must remain vigilant. False prophets abound, offering a veneer of piety while their lives tell another story. If priest’s lives fail to reflect the self-giving love of Christ, their words remain empty echoes. This caution applies to every priest and every believer. We are called to constant conversion, allowing the Holy Spirit to prune whatever in us resists the flow of divine love. May the ministry of priests draw others into the same covenant of grace, nourished by Word and sacrament. We entrust all that we are and all that we hope to Our Lady of Guadalupe, who leads us to her Son.

Spotlight on Mission San Juan
| | |
Whether you are a faith filled pilgrim, a history enthusiast, a curious traveler, or a local looking to rediscover your city's roots, the Sacred Space Virtual Tour invites you to encounter San Antonio’s Catholic heritage and history in fresh and memorable ways.
Mission San Juan is named in honor of St. John of Capistrano, the Franciscan “Soldier-Priest” who rallied Christian forces to defend Hungarian Belgrade from the Ottoman Empire in 1456. Unfortunately, the original priceless 18th-century statue of San Juan was stolen from the sanctuary in 2000. The Hungarian people presented a beautifully carved replacement to the parish, which now graces the sanctuary, honoring the saint’s courageous legacy. To experience the full tour, visit Mission San Juan Capistrano today.
