Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS
|
God has deigned to direct His merciful gaze upon us to save us, not in spite of our sin and our unworthiness as creatures, but precisely because of who He is and what we are like. At the same time, He wanted to make us partakers in His own mission. God’s mercy unfolds from itself, surpassing our misery with its greatness. God has become man so that human beings can participate in the divine life and mission of Jesus. Pope Francis wanted to include this mystery in his motto, “miserando atque eligendo,” which means that by looking at each of us with His merciful gaze, Christ chooses us and calls us to follow Him. Make yourself available to the mercy you receive from God, so that others can receive it through you. May the Holy Spirit bear witness in your lives that with Christ, through Him and in Him, you are truly children of God.

World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life | February 2
|
In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church. We hope that you find the following resources helpful for your own celebrations of World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life!

Catholic Charities: Adopt-A-Senior Program
Catholic Charities deployed volunteers to visit and care for isolated seniors as part of the Adopt-A-Senior program on January 6. Volunteers met and picked up food and care packages for seniors at Guadalupe Community Center before visiting seniors. Volunteers assembled care packages including food, hygiene items, cleaning products, blankets, activities, and other items as Adopt-A-Senior care packages on January 5. Last Saturday, volunteers received a brief orientation and were dispatched with care packages to seniors enrolled in the Adopt-A-Senior program. Adopt-A-Senior pairs compassionate companions with isolated seniors who may require home delivery of basic needs and care packages as well as regular companions to reduce the effects of isolation.
