Message from Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

One of the most challenging calls of our Christian life is to love our enemies. Even as this call may seem difficult and counterintuitive, it lies at the heart of the Gospel, revealing the unique nature of our faith and the power of God’s mercy. True strength is not measured by our ability to retaliate but by our capacity to forgive and to respect the dignity that God has given to every person. His mercy flowed from a heart transformed by God’s love heart that sees each person as made in the image of God. Even those who seem to oppose us reflect, in some way, God’s creative work. This understanding calls us to honor the dignity of every life and to look beyond our differences, recognizing the light of God in every soul. Take a moment to think of someone who seems far from reflecting God’s love. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see that person as God sees them and to fill your heart with love for them. In doing this, we are called to honor the dignity inherent in every life. Now, imagine a gentle dove carrying an olive branch a timeless symbol of peace and renewal. Like the dove, we are called to offer our olive branch of mercy, even to those who have hurt us. In this simple act of love, our faith finds its truest expression, transforming bitterness into hope and hostility into reconciliation. May the Holy Spirit fill our hearts with hope and courage.

Campus Ministry Ash Wednesday | March 5

852f91fe-cfc4-4685-ab50-bc47ab05f049 image

Campus Ministry invites all college students, faculty and staff to Ash Wednesday Masses or Liturgy of the Word (LOW) on campuses.

For centuries, Catholic Christians have marked the beginning of the season of Lent by receiving ash on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday. This tradition has its roots in the Old Testament, where wearing ashes was a common sign of repentance for sins, and a sign of one’s humility before God. Since Lent is a season of penitential renewal through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, it’s appropriate that this ancient sign marks the beginning of the season.

Five mosaics of Jesus and the four evangelists — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — were blessed at Holy Redeemer Church on February 16 by Archbishop Gustavo. “As we gather to hear God’s word and partake in the heavenly banquet, we also celebrate the blessing of your newly renovated church,” the archbishop began. “I congratulate your parish family and give thanks to God for this beautiful gift — a true sanctuary where our faith is nurtured and our hope renewed.”

Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette celebrated the Jubilee Mass for Family Evangelization and Catechesis at St. Andrew’s Church in Pleasanton on February 23. Jubilee Masses are a powerful expression of the Church’s call to conversion, penance, and spiritual renewal during a Jubilee year. It provides the faithful with a unique opportunity to experience God’s mercy, deepen their faith, and obtain the spiritual benefits associated with the Jubilee year, including indulgences. The Mass serves as both a communal and personal moment of grace, drawing the faithful closer to God and the Church community.
