MESSAGE FROM

Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

In proclaiming the Good News, it is quite challenging to make sense of things amid narrative distortions. But God’s Word allows us to see everything from the perspective of salvation history. Our Lord Jesus Christ is constantly made present among us by the Holy Spirit, who’s coming upon the disciples we commemorated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. The Life-Giving Spirit helps us, Christians, to remain at peace, even when veiled misrepresentations resort to making no distinction between truly charitable work — advocating for basic human dignity — and abetment with crime. “Nothing is new under the sun!” (Eccl 1:9). “Blessed are the peacemakers…” (Mt 5:9). Let us be concerned when evil is not falsely uttered against us, when we are not insulted or even persecuted. It would be a sign that we are not doing the right thing. The Lord’s challenge for all of us is to empty our hearts of self-serving passions and make room for others … to make room for the vulnerable. Ask God for His healing touch in a world that yearns for His mercy.

Del Rio’s Catholic community came together May 27 to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Catholic Charities. The 4,500-foot facility at 106 Miers Street has served nearly 6,000 people since its opening a year earlier. After a brief commemorative ceremony, volunteers gave away window fans and bags of groceries to more than 100 people lined up outside the building.
