It is not enough to feel gazed upon and loved by God. St. Luke makes sure that we understand that it is not enough to listen to a call, a special invitation from God to be involved in His affairs. Mary does not remain silent after she hears the angel’s words. She is not a passive listener, so she asks a practical question of discernment: “How can this be…?” Once she clearly sees the consistency of the proposal and understands that it is not of her own merit, but rather of the pure initiative of God — although requiring her full cooperation — she accepts. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.” She models for us the perfect answer to God’s calling. We do not make ourselves worthy. God’s merciful gaze is what dignifies us enough to be called to partake in His plan of love. We must respond actively, with a conscious “Yes, I trust God, I belong to Him.” “May it be done to me according to your word.”
