Friday after Ash Wednesday

Viernes después de ceniza

Esto dice el Señor:

“Clama a voz en cuello y que nadie te detenga.

Alza la voz como trompeta.

Denuncia a mi pueblo sus delitos,

a la casa de Jacob sus pecados.

Me buscan día a día y quieren conocer mi voluntad,

'como si fuera un pueblo que practicara la justicia

y respetara los juicios de Dios.

Me piden sentencias justas

y anhelan tener cerca a Dios.

Me dicen todos los días:

‘¿Para qué ayunamos, si tú no nos ves?

¿Para qué nos mortificamos, si no te das por enterado?’

Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Ash Wednesday - Holy Mass

Holy Mass, Blessing and Imposition of the Ashes

Dear sisters and dear brothers!

When you give alms, or pray or fast, take care to do these things in secret, for your Father sees in secret (cf. Mt 6:4). “Go to your room”: this is the invitation that Jesus addresses to each of us at the beginning of the Lenten journey.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

In the season of Lent, it is good to look for occasions to be silent. It is fitting to get away for a moment, to reflect, to pray, to offer sacrifices and works of charity, and to purify the heart. We should all be scandalized by our own sins, as we face the immensity of God’s mercy. To be able to fully trust in God’s mercy, we must practice mercy. Remember the three steps: to be moved with pity, to approach, and to touch. Whom? Those excluded by society and by ourselves due to resentment, selfishness, or prejudice. Next year is the jubilee year. The theme is “Pilgrims of Hope.” The Holy Father has invited us to prepare for this Holy Year by praying. I hope that in this year with all these blessings from God, we must remind ourselves that we need to commit ourselves to pray more and better. The Holy Father knows that if we pray more in the world, the world will be a better place.

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me... ill and you cared for me... Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me" (MT 25: 35–36, 40).

Join young adults from across the archdiocese as we follow the command of Jesus to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, and serve Him by serving those in need. In partnership with Catholic Charities of San Antonio and the Young Adult Board of Advisors, we will make and deliver lunch bags to socially isolated seniors enrolled in the Adopt-a-Senior Program, following the model of missionary disciples whom Jesus sent "in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit" (LK 10:1). Be part of our mission as we bring the presence of Jesus to our brothers and sisters in need. Join us at Catholic Charities of San Antonio (202 W. French Pl., SA TX 78212 - Directions) as we begin with Mass at 8 a.m. and then go out to proclaim the joy of the Gospel.

Vatican announces theme for World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis has chosen a line from Psalm 71 — "Do not cast me off in my old age" — as the theme for the 2024 celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. In a note announcing the theme for the day, which will be celebrated July 28, the Vatican said the choice was "meant to call attention to the fact that, sadly, loneliness is the bitter lot in life of many elderly persons, so often the victims of the throwaway culture." Pope Francis celebrated the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021 and decreed that it be observed each year on the Sunday closest to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Jesus' grandparents.
