Pope Leo XIV appeals for peace and justice amid alarming Ceuta crisis

Pope Leo XIV on August 2 expressed concern over the “alarming situation” in Ceuta and appealed for solutions capable of bringing peace, stability and justice to the Spanish enclave facing a major migration and humanitarian crisis.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

For 100 years as an archdiocese, San Antonio has been a Church born along rivers, missions, and roads travelled by countless pilgrims seeking God. We are a Church where city and countryside, parish and mission, family and institution have been woven together into one fabric of faith. This local Church has opened its gates wide. When religious persecution darkened the lives of many in Mexico, San Antonio became a place of refuge. Religious communities found a home here. Seminarians crossed the border carrying their vocations, and the Seminary of Saint Philip Neri in Castroville helped keep alive the light of the priesthood for a suffering Church. New congregations, universities, hospitals, charitable works, and ministries became signs that the Gospel is never merely spoken; it takes flesh: it heals, teaches, feeds, and accompanies. With particular attention to the poor and those on the margins, the Church in San Antonio has sought to recognize in every person the face of the Lord Jesus and to respond with compassion, justice, and hope. Here in San Antonio, diverse cultures learned not simply to live beside one another, but to enrich one another. Christians engaged neighbors of other faiths with respect and friendship. The light of Christ is revealed not to strangers, but to fellow pilgrims. As we begin our second century as an archdiocese, let each of us become a bearer of light: in our families, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and ministries. A welcoming light. A healing light. A courageous light. A light that attracts others because it reflects the charity of the Lord Jesus. And when future generations look back upon our time, may they find that the flame was brighter because we carried it faithfully beneath the loving gaze of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

He Draws Near on Every Road

All Summer | #GodOnTheGoSA

On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walked in confusion until “Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them” (Luke 24:15). They recognized Him at last in the breaking of the bread. The God on the Go Summer Challenge carries that same hope. Jesus is present in every tabernacle of the world, waiting to be recognized. Wherever your travels take you this summer, consider finding a Mass and stepping inside. Let your Buddy mark the moment your family knelt before the Lord in a church far from home. These are the memories that shape a lifetime of faith.

Find a Mass near you and bring your Buddy along.

There is a Place in the Church for this Grief

Thursday, September 10, at 6 p.m., at St. Matthew Church

Some losses are hard to say out loud. When a loved one dies by suicide, the grief often arrives tangled with questions, and many families end up carrying it quietly for years. The archdiocese sets aside a special Mass to carry it together.

Archbishop Gustavo will celebrate the Remembrance Mass for Those Who Have Died by Suicide at St. Matthew Church (directions), in prayerful observance of World Suicide Prevention Day. If you are grieving or know someone who is in grief, this special Mass is a time to give your pain to Christ Crucified. You do not need the right words. You do not need to explain anything to anyone. Scripture already promises what this Mass is built on: “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed” (Psalm 34:19). All are welcome.

Inspired by this year’s theme, “I Will Never Forget You” (Isaiah 49:15), Pope Leo XIV reminds all to cherish grandparents and the elderly on World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Archbishop Gustavo joined in recognizing this special occasion.

Catholic Charities staff gathered late last month with the Community Foundation of the Hill Country and other partners to announce grant updates and recovery efforts from recent flooding. Partnership across all organizations is vital to providing emergency assistance to individuals and families across the region. Catholic Charities deployed to Uvalde on July 16. As of August 1 they have assisted more than 528 families, composed of 1,450 total family members. When called to help, they stay for the long haul, supporting communities through every phase of response and recovery including emergency assistance, essential needs and other wrap around services.
