Pope Leo XIV says evil crumbles when the Gospel is lived out

Credit: Vatican Media

Pope Leo XIV said June 14 that when the Gospel is proclaimed and lived out, evil gives way before the power of the risen Christ.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Friar Antonio Margil de Jesús walked these lands barefoot, with no baggage other than the Gospel and a burning heart; it will soon be 300 years since he was called to the Father’s house on August 6, 1726. Eight centuries ago, a young nobleman in Lisbon stripped himself of comfort and became a friar who would shake continents with nothing but the Word of God and love for the poor. This archdiocese — 100 years old in its dignity, ancient in its faith — continues that same barefoot walk. Saint Anthony arrived at Assisi unnoticed, asked for the least assignment, and waited. Then one Sunday, compelled by obedience, he opened his mouth – and the Holy Spirit did the rest. His tongue, as his first biographer wrote, began to move with such wisdom that all were struck with astonishment. He had become, in the words of Pope Gregory IX, an Ark of the Covenant — not because he accumulated knowledge, but because he gave everything away. Pope Leo XIV, writing on the love for the poor, reminds us that “contact with those who are lowly and powerless is a fundamental way of encountering the Lord of history.” Anthony proved this every day in Padua — spending hours in the confessional, working for debtors, standing between the powerless and their oppressors. The harvest was abundant; he labored until his body failed at 36. You are the protagonists of this city and this archdiocese. Catholic Charities, our parishes, our schools – sent into every corner of this harvest. The Kingdom of God is at hand.

Tomorrow, Father Will Combs, BBD, will share what he has learned from 22 years of guiding children toward the Eucharist at St. Mary Magdalene Parish and School. Prayer is the first language of discipleship, and the way a child first learns it shapes the rest of their life. Alongside him, Father Martin Pablo will open his work on Sensory-Friendly Mass, a ministry that helps families of children with sensory needs encounter the liturgy without barriers. Catechists, parents, and ministry leaders will leave Oblate School of Theology (directions) with practical tools and a renewed sense of why this work matters.

There will be time for personal prayer, communal prayer, and Eucharistic Adoration. Email Sister Kara Davis, DC, with any questions.

Offered in English & Spanish

Who are we as catechists, and how do we help others encounter Jesus? Join us for a one-hour formation to pray and reflect on the heart of our calling as catechists. Together, we'll explore our role in facilitating a personal encounter with Christ and renewing our sense of purpose in this beautiful ministry. As Pope Leo XIV reminds us, "Because friendship with Jesus gives us joy, sets us free and helps us see, step by step, the vocation and the path that God has planned for each of us" (June 10, 2026). Whether you're new to catechesis or have served for years, this is a time to be refreshed, encouraged, and reconnected to the "why" behind your ministry.

Forming Catechists in the Heart of the Good Shepherd

Those who form our youngest disciples carry a tender and demanding vocation. The Found Sheep Central Texas CGS Group invites catechists and formation leaders to a two-day workshop, Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). Led by Chip DeLorenzo, M.Ed., author of the book by the same title, the gathering offers practical tools for building a community of mutual respect, setting limits with kindness and firmness, and guiding children toward self-regulation, cooperation, and independence. Whether you serve in an atrium, a classroom, or a parish faith formation program, you will find approaches that invite cooperation rather than power struggles. Catechists will leave St. Peter the Apostle Church (directions) ready to accompany the children entrusted to them with patience and confidence, in the gentle manner of the Good Shepherd who knows each one by name. Registration is $90 and includes lunch both days and a copy of Chip's book.

A Day for Mothers and Daughters

Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at St. Matthew Church

Every mother of a growing daughter recognizes the same quiet question. When will she ask? What will I say? The archdiocese, in partnership with Natural Womanhood, hosts the Period Genius Workshop at St. Matthew Church (directions). The day is built for fifth and sixth grade girls and their mothers, gathering for body literacy, cycle awareness, and meaningful conversation in a Catholic setting. There are no awkward surprises. Just a clear, age-appropriate framework, presented by Catholic mother of five Jackie Aguilar, that helps your daughter understand her body and helps you lead the conversation with confidence. We hope you will join us at the very beginning.
