| | | On the Memorial of St. Anthony of Padua, patron of our archdiocese, we rejoice in the gift of a true “Evangelical Doctor.” Pope Pius XII gave St. Anthony this title to remind us that holiness and faithfulness to the truth about God’s love go hand in hand. Anthony’s life shines as a beacon: his heart burned with love for Christ and his mouth spoke only the truth of the Gospel. He preached Christ crucified to fishermen, scholars, and the marginalized alike, offering the bread of the Word as the true nourishment of life. St. Anthony’s evangelical zeal sprang from a love rooted in prayer. He believed that a preacher’s words lose their power when not crowned by the proof of holy living. He imitated Christ in simplicity, asking nothing of the world, yet giving the world everything in his sermons and confessions. Like him, we too are sent – without bag or sandals – to bring peace: a peace that rests on those who welcome us and heals the wounds that despair inflicts. Let us, then, imitate St. Anthony’s devotion. May we model Anthony’s balance of contemplation and action, retreating before the Lord to be sent forth renewed; speaking Christ boldly yet tenderly to all we meet. St. Anthony, teach us to trust in the power of God’s Word. May your example ignite our hearts to preach, to serve, and to love without measure.
