| | | Let us consider a simple image: a pillar. A pillar holds weight. A pillar remains standing through wind and weather. A pillar supports something greater than itself. St. James, whose feast day we recently celebrated, became such a pillar. A tradition cherished by generations tells us that while James preached along the Ebro River in Zaragoza, Spain, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him standing upon a pillar. She came as a mother bringing hope to a weary missionary. That pillar became a sign that those lands would support a great work of evangelization. Many centuries later, the evangelization of the New World began under the crowns of Castile and Aragon. For this reason, Mary and James stand together at the foundations of Hispanic heritage. After the Ascension, the apostles knew Mary closely and learned hope in her company. Her maternal heart continues to intercede for every pilgrim seeking her Son’s face. Pope Leo XIV recently reminded us that “the Bread of the Word and of the Eucharist are even more necessary to us than material food.” Here the pillar of the Church is renewed. The Lord Jesus gives Himself to strengthen His people. In the name of Jesus, let us stand as pillars for others: encouraging a discouraged person, offering a call, a visit, or a word of hope. Become a pillar that helps someone stand. And may Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Hope, keep us close to her Son

A Historic Mass. A New Vision. All Are Welcome at the Assembly
Saturday, November 7, at 4 p.m.
| | |
This Monday, Aug. 3, marks the 100-year anniversary of Pope Pius XI elevating the Diocese of San Antonio to a Metropolitan Archdiocese in 1926. On Saturday, Nov. 7, the People of God across the archdiocese will gather at Nelson W. Wolff Stadium (directions) for the Centennial Celebration and the proclamation of our new Archdiocesan Pastoral Vision by Archbishop Gustavo.
This is more than an event. It is a moment of renewal and celebration. Archbishop Gustavo has asked that parish vigil Masses be set aside that Saturday, so we may gather as one Church around the one table of the Eucharist. The Pastoral Vision will set our priorities and call every baptized person to participate more fully in the mission of Christ.
Come with your family to walk together into what God is calling us to become. Save the date and RSVP. Gates open 3 p.m. Mass begins at 4 p.m.
