Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

I suspect that, for legal professionals, there is a great sense of relief to apply the clear parameters of the law. When the law is well defined, the role of interpretation becomes simpler. But the moments when discretion is required, when judgment must stretch beyond the written word — these moments can be the most challenging. How do we seek wisdom to guide decisions in these spaces? The Pharisees had a different struggle. Rather than humbly submitting to God’s wisdom, and allowing it to guide their actions, they acted as if the law were their possession. They took pride not in the justice or mercy the law should foster, but in the power the law gave them. They forgot that their expertise and their positions of authority were meant to serve others, not themselves. This is a temptation that can challenge anyone in a position of power or influence, including legal professionals. The relief we seek from making the right judgments comes from a deeper source: the wisdom of God. It is a wisdom that calls us to go beyond appearances and to discern the truth. It is a wisdom that offers peace to the heart, even in the face of difficult decisions, because it is rooted in the love and mercy of God, in whom reality finds its ultimate meaning. God’s wisdom is always available, offering guidance, clarity, and peace.

Pope Francis has stated, “The Church is the body of Christ, who reigns as king over all Creation. Everything, including political life, belongs to Jesus Christ, and so participation in political life belongs to the mission of the Church. Our mandate is to ‘go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation’ (Mk 16:15). . . . Here, ‘the creation’ refers to every aspect of human life. . . ‘Nothing human can be alien to it’” Evangelii Gaudium, no. 181, quoting Aparecida Document, no. 380.

Dates and times for early voting may vary by polling locations. Check if you are registered to vote and find early voting stations by visiting this website. Find guidance from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship here. We urge pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use this information to help form their consciences; to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching. The statement lifts up our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American citizens with rights and duties as participants in the civil order.

The St. Mary’s University School of Law, the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild gathered the San Antonio legal community to celebrate the 72nd annual Red Mass at San Fernando Cathedral on October 17. The Red Mass tradition dates to 1245 in Europe when both the bench and bar attended Mass together at the beginning of each judicial session. St. Mary’s Law and the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild of San Antonio revived the tradition 72 years ago and organize the annual event with the Archdiocese, and representatives from San Antonio legal organizations, the judiciary and the State Legislature. Archbishop Gustavo was the principal celebrant and homilist, assisted by Marianist priests and clergy from the cathedral. Patricia Vargas (J.D. ’02), president of the San Antonio Bar Association, and Santos Vargas, J.D. (B.A. ’99), president-elect of the State Bar of Texas, provided welcoming remarks. Prior to the liturgy, judges, legal organization representatives and law faculty led a procession carrying bright red banners through Main Plaza to the cathedral with more than 100 persons representing over three dozen legal organizations: including Guild; Societies; associations; Boards; branches of local, state, and federal governments; as well as visiting educational institutions and reformed traditions.
