Prayer of the Week

For the gift of sufficient rain in Texas to end the drought, especially for those most impacted by water shortage, and for the wisdom and charity to be good stewards of this precious gift.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

Jesus Christ is truly present, living and glorious, under the consecrated species of bread and wine, where we really find Him in a substantial manner with His Body and His Blood, with his soul and his divinity. ... The celebration of the Eucharist is truly the source and summit of our lives and the life of the Church. It is the food for faith, hope and charity. The Church exists thanks to the Eucharist and for the Eucharist. The Eucharist is celebrated by the Church, through the work of the Holy Spirit. We need to be raised by our patient Heavenly Father, so we do not become like picky eaters, who only delight in one or two parts of the Meal He offers us. We need to pray insistently: Lord, increase our faith! … By allowing the Lord to express His love for us, we become more aware of our dignity and our mission, which is to communicate that same love. In the process, we learn to experience ourselves loving God, and God loving not only us, but others through us. We gradually learn to immerse ourselves in the mystery of God and in the lives of others. We learn that we cannot open our eyes to the Word and close them to the Eucharistic species, and vice versa. We learn that we cannot open our eyes to God in the Eucharist while we close them to our neighbors and their needs.

In unison last Friday, parishes celebrated the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in their communities. The next day, we witnessed a blessed moment of grace as thousands of Catholics from across the archdiocese united to celebrate our faith as a Eucharistic People of Jesus Christ at St. Mary's University. Thank you to all those who attended and inspired the hundreds of thousands who watched the live broadcast locally on Catholic Television of San Antonio and nationally on the Shalom World Network. If you missed the congress, you can watch the entire event online

Giving Thanks to the Lord

Significantly, the origin of the word Eucharist derives from the greek eukharistia, which means "thanksgiving." At each Eucharistic Celebration, we unite around the table of the Lord "always and everywhere to give (him) thanks". As we prepare to gather around a meal on Thanksgiving Day to nourish our physical bodies, let us remember our need for spiritual nourishment, satisfied only by Jesus Christ, "the bread of life" (John 6:35). Click here for educational resources and prayers about the Eucharist and Eucharistic Revival from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Eucharistic Theme of this year's Assembly 2023

The vibrancy of parish and school and ministerial life in the archdiocese was on display in the high-energy opening video shown to more than 3,000 attendees at the 2023 Archdiocesan Assembly, held this past Saturday at St. Mary’s University. This joyful visual representation, created by Catholic Television of San Antonio, highlighted the Eucharistic theme of this year’s gathering, demonstrated in music, movement, and liturgical reverence from a wide range of individuals and organizations for Our Lord truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.
