On Dec. 6, the faithful commemorate a bishop in the early church who was known for generosity and love of children. Born in Lycia in Asia Minor around the late third or fourth century, St. Nicholas of Myra is more than just the inspiration for the modern day Santa.

Pope Francis has received the first-ever all-electric popemobile from automaker Mercedes-Benz. The open-top vehicle, which for the last 45 years has been manufactured by the German luxury automaker, is used by Pope Francis to greet pilgrims in St. Peter's Square during general audiences and other papal ceremonies. The company's CEO Ola Kallenius personally handed over the new model to the pope on Wednesday at the Vatican.

Message from Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, MSpS

Most Rev. Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

At this time of the year, the days get shorter and colder. It is precisely at this time, when everything seems gloomy, that God gives us a beautiful promise: a new light is coming, a light that will make everything brighter and warmer. That light is Jesus, who comes to fill our hearts with love and hope. Advent is a special time when we prepare for the coming of Jesus, both at Christmas and into our lives every day. Preparing for something special takes patience and care, just like when you want to grow a plant. You can’t rush it or pull it up too early, or it will break. You must give it good soil, water, sunlight, and protect it from the cold. This is how we prepare our hearts for Jesus: we take time to care for them with love, kindness, and prayer. Think of the lights on a Christmas tree. They shine so beautifully, but they take time and effort to put up. That’s how we prepare for Jesus -- we spend time in prayer, sharing love with others, and waiting patiently for His light to fill us. Let us open our hearts, care for one another, and get ready for the light of Jesus to shine brightly in our lives.

“Donations are needed to have the ordinary kinds of things many senior religious need in terms of food, clothing, and housing. We owe it to them to take care of them. Maybe even more than we have in the past… they need it,” says Father Maury Smith, 87, a member of the Order of Friars Minor in St. Louis.

Father Maury Smith serves as a spiritual director and writes biweekly for Today's Catholic Newspaper. His legacy inspires others to embark on their journey towards God, and Father Maury is a spiritual companion to them, growing in faith, hope, and love in their daily lives together.
