MESSAGE FROM

Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS

It is always good for us to take a look at the underworld of the heart. Without realizing it — and with the rush of life — we collect junk, which — in the best scenario — is useless. Sometimes this junk takes the form of attitudes, postures, gestures, which are not quite evangelical. Lent may be the occasion, the right time, to do this clean-up, which allows us to continue our pilgrimage lightly packed. The direction of Lenten conversion, following Jesus, is threefold: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This threefold focus on God, ourselves, and others, helps us respond to Pope Francis’ invitation to become part of a revolution of tenderness, which begun with the Lord’s Incarnation in Mary’s womb. He proposes two ideas: “the beauty of feeling that one is loved by God, and the beauty of feeling loved in the name of God.”

Catholic Charities kicks off Lenten campaigns

Catholic Charities recently kicked the 40 Cans for Lent and 40 Days of Service to engage the community in a non-denominational effort to feed the hungry and strengthen the most vulnerable during Lent from February 22 to April 6. 40 Cans for Lent aims to collect 200,000 pounds of food to feed all people regardless of race, religion, or national origin through Catholic Charities Food Pantries and the Mobile Food Pantry. 40 Days of Service plans to engage the community to serve others by preparing for crisis response, providing humanitarian aid, mentoring and tutoring youth, visiting isolated seniors, and much more. The kickoff event, held at the Guadalupe Community Center on February 23, drew more than 300 community leaders, partners, university, elementary, and high school students, Catholic clergy and parishioners, businesses, and others as the community unites to fight hunger and encounter those in need.
