"All we know about the new economic world tells us that nations which train engineers will prevail over those which train lawyers. No nation has ever sued its way to greatness."

Happy Employee Ownership Month

October has been designated Employee Stock   Ownership Plan (ESOP) Month by The ESOP Association  in an effort to expand the awareness of ESOPs to business throughout the United States as well as to the elected officials in our nation's capital.

PFS TECO is proud to be an ESOP (that is, an employee-owned company) and October is when we make extra efforts to communicate the importance of acting like an owner to our 60+ ESOP participants. Our employee owners know that PFS TECO is managed like a regular business, but they also know that their efforts to improve customer service and control costs have a direct impact on their retirement savings. Countless ESOP companies have shown that a well communicated ESOP will increase employee engagement and satisfaction.

Happy Employees - Happy Customers.

Cross Laminated Timber: The Future of Urban Construction?
From the Smithsonian Magazine, Oct 2016:
From the street, the new seven-story "T3" building going up in Minneapolis looks a lot like an old warehouse: large repeating windows and weathered steel sheathing the color of brick. But it's a revolutionary structure, and the irony is that its cutting-edge nature rests on an old-school material: wood. When T3 opens this month, it will be the tallest modern wooden building in the United States. And to hear the architect behind the tower tell it, T3 is the future of urban construction.

Sustainable Wood Guide at ReUseWood.org
The  American Wood Council (AWC) and  Canadian Wood Council (CWC) have partnered with  Building Materials Reuse Association (BMRA) to develop an online North American directory outlining reuse and recycling options for wood and wood products, at  ReuseWood.org.

"For wood products, there has historically been a lack of awareness of the opportunities to recycle and reuse wood products, and thereby extend their useful life. We are aiming to change that," said AWC President & CEO Robert Glowinski. "Our industry wants to do its part when it comes to the full life-cycle impact of our products. It's our hope that this directory will help educate builders, designers and consumers on the many opportunities to salvage, recycle or reuse wood products, in turn reducing waste."   For more, read complete  AWC News Release .

Director, Hearth Products and QC
Building Products Division

As Director of Hearth Products and Quality Control at PFS TECO, Wayne Terpstra has a dual role within the company. He works directly with hearth product clients, manufacturers who produce gas and wood fireplaces, stoves, and gas/log assemblies. PFS TECO certifies this broad range of hearth-related products to US EPA and other national safety standards.  In his QC role, Wayne coordinates the company-wide quality management system and ISO accreditations.

After receiving a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Wayne began his career working at Underwriters Laboratories in the Chicago area. He later held positions at three different manufacturers of hearth products, including serving as President of US operations for Dovre, a manufacturer of cast iron stoves headquartered in Belgium.

Wayne and his wife Miriam have two children and six grandchildren. He is an auto enthusiast and owns a number of antique cars, like the 1930 Model A touring sedan he sometimes displays at antique auto shows. Wayne and Miriam also enjoy traveling and last year took a cruise on the Danube River from Budapest to Amsterdam -- an experience he highly recommends.
