The Next Era of Women in Finance: Recapping the 8th Annual STA WIF Symposium

By Inessa Ruffman, JonesTrading

STA WIF Chair

Our 90th Annual Market Structure Conference in DC was a tremendous success - thank you to all who attended! We couldn't think of a better way to kick off the conference than with the 8th Annual Women in Finance (WIF) Symposium to highlight the achievements of inspiring women in our industry. Since its inception in 2016, the WIF Symposium has provided a setting for STA members and conference attendees to hear from leading women in financial services, network with peers and receive valuable career insights.

This year's event began with incoming STA Secretary Patricia Koetzner, Managing Director, Equity Sales & Trading at Siebert Williams Shank & Co, introducing Eva Walsh, Executive Director, Equity Trading at J.P. Morgan Asset Management and the 2023 recipient of STA WIF's Woman Mentor of the Year Award.

Commenting on Ms. Walsh's trailblazing efforts for workplace equality, Ms. Koetzner said, "Eva has never forgotten those who mentored her over the years...She was a champion of diversity and inclusion before it was a buzzword.”

Following the award presentation, Ms. Koetzner sat down for an interview with our keynote speaker, Tracy Caliendo, Managing Director, Head of Global Commission Management and Hedge Fund Services at Bank of America Securities.

Ms. Caliendo shared both career and personal anecdotes with the audience, reflecting on the benefits of networking and how she balances her high-energy Wall Street career with her family of seven. "For the younger people in this room, it is so important to network early in your careers. As a mother, it's hard to get out at night...so when you're young, go all in, because your brand is everything in this industry," she said.

On behalf of the entire STA Women in Finance Committee and greater community, we'd like to thank Tracy, Patricia and Eva - and all the other women in our program this year - for sharing their unique perspectives and championing the next generation of women in finance.

See you in Orlando next year!

#GrassrootsGiving

This year, STA's 90th Annual Market Structure Conference recognized the Foundation for Women Warriors (FFWW), a charitable organization dedicated to empowering and providing support for female veterans for over 100 years.

We were also honored to invite FFWW CEO and Marine Corps veteran Jodie Grenier to our conference this year.

I Asked a Financial Planner for Retirement Tips As a Single Woman

Insider

Not only do we live longer, but the gender pay gap is real. For every man's dollar, women earn 84 cents. Plus, women are often put in a caregiving role, which means time off from work — and not contributing regularly to retirement funds.

Long Before Hitting a Glass Ceiling in the Workplace, Women Face a ‘Broken Rung,’ Report Finds

CNBC

Women in corporate America have come a long way in the last decade. While the overall gender pay gap has not changed much, it has narrowed among top executives. For the first time ever, women CEOs make up more than 10% among Fortune 500 companies. But CEOs are often recruited from among top leadership and seeing even more women in the C-suite is key to having more women ascend to the highest levels.
