Dear People of Ascension,

This month we have been making our way through the letter of James. It’s practical and challenging, calling us to live an ethical, integrated life and build communities that welcome all equally and care especially for the most vulnerable. “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works?” “The tongue is a fire.” “A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.”

In this Sunday’s reading from the end of the letter, James calls us to pray. This is the bedrock and the lifeblood of the community of faith. Whether we are suffering or cheerful, we are to offer prayer and praise. When we are sick or struggling, we are to ask for the prayer support of the community. Prayer is linked with honest conversation and sharing each other’s burdens- the vulnerability of confessing our sins to each other, forgiving and praying for each other’s healing and wholeness. Praying for the wholeness of the larger world of which we are a part. Telling the truth to God and building enough trust to tell the truth of our hearts to one another, that we may be sustained by one another’s prayers.

How do you experience this community of prayer? For me, praying with another person is often a privilege that deepens my own experience of God. I have certainly been strengthened by the prayers of friends when I could not really pray for myself. Here at Ascension, I am grateful for the wonderful community of caring and prayer that has formed online in the evenings, and touched by the people who add a name to the prayers of the people on Sunday morning. Sometimes someone will ask, “how can I pray for you?” and I am surprised by the answering need that reveals itself.

In these troubled times, may we grow in our practice of prayer, not only as individuals but as a community. And may our prayers- of praise or petition, suffering or joy- awaken us to the presence of God in the midst of it all.

Liz

Sunday Forum

This Sunday's Forum, “Trees and the Sacred" - Join Mark Larrimore, Professor of Religious Studies at the New School, for a wide-ranging discussion of trees and the unique, sacred relationships we share with them.

Bountiful God, you call us to labor with you in tending the earth: Where we lack love, open our hearts to the world; where we waste, give us discipline to conserve; where we neglect, awaken our minds and wills to insight and care. May we with all your creatures honor and serve you in all things for you live and reign with Christ, Redeemer of all, and with your Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Tower Brownstone Update- We are coming to the end! Our architect did an inspection on the rods and stars work early this week and the work is substantially done. There are a few “punch items” to complete which should be finished quickly. We hope to be able to remove the scaffolding shortly.

Due to delays and other overruns on this project, we are still seeking funds for it. If you have not yet pledged to the tower or if you can increase your contribution, it would greatly help us manage these unexpected expenses. We are so grateful for your generosity and understanding during this critical time!

Remember, if you pay by check, put “Tower Brownstone” in the memo line. If you pay through Abundant, select “Manton matching grant” from the drop-down menu.
