June Sermon Series
Everyone has a favorite scripture. For some its John 3:16, for others its Jeremiah 29:11, and for some it is something else. Really there are almost endless options, and some scriptures stand out based on certain times in our lives. On June 2, 23, and 30 four of our pastors (Bill, Kipp, Sherry, and Butch) will be sharing sermons based one of their favorite passages of scripture. These sermons are messages from their heart.
Register for Vacation Bible Camp
It's time to sign up for our voyage to Mars and beyond! We invite 4k (by September 1st, 2018) through 5th graders to join us. During Vacation Bible Camp we will go on a journey through space using music, crafts, games, skits, Bible Study, science, and more to explore where God's power can take us. VBC will be June 10-14 from 9:00-12:00 each day.

Please let the church know if you are not able to pay for VBC. We do not want any child to miss this great experience because of money.

VBC Break Room
We can use your help for the VBC break room. Each year during VBC we provide drinks and snacks for the 250+ volunteers and teen helpers. This year we are in need of 2-liter drinks (Diet Coke, Coke, Sprite, Sunkist, Root beer, etc.), chips, cookies, crackers and candy. We have a box designated for this in the church office and on the preschool floor. If you would like to donate perishable items (fruit, dips, breakfast casseroles, brownies, muffins, donuts, veggie trays, etc.) we will take those the week of VBC in the Lighthouse kitchen area located on the 2nd floor. Thanks in advance for your help! If you have questions, please contact Kim Harper (615-525-6622).
5th Grade Splash Adventure
5th graders who attend Vacation Bible Camp have the opportunity to finish out their week at Splash Adventure! After VBC ends on Friday, June 14, they will meet in the Student Ministries Cafe, have pizza for lunch, and then go to Splash Adventure. 5th graders must be registered before June 1 and there are limited spots available. Please contact Jeremiah Stone (jstone@vhumc.org) with questions.

Elementary Awards Assembly
The end of the year awards assembly for our 1st-5th graders will be this Sunday, June 2, from 9:45-10:45 in the Fellowship Hall. We will be recognizing our Sunday School high attendance winners and we will be choosing our memory verse winners. Our memory verse winners will receive an electric scooter - but, you must be present to win! We will also have games, activities and more prizes. We hope you can join us for the fun!
VHUMC is Growing
Last week, we had 11 families (19 individuals) join VHUMC and 3 baptisms. Our love for God and love for one another is fueling this growth, just as the Bible told us it would! Let's seek these new members out and welcome them (in the worship services they attend):

Godspell Auditions
Auditions for our upcoming musical, Godspell, will be held June 9-10. The production dates for this wonderful musical based on the Gospel of Matthew will be August 8-11. All people ages 12+ are invited to audition. Please send audition requests to Quint Harris (qharris@vhumc.org).
Summer Music Lessons
The Conservatory is now registering for summer music lessons. Want to take voice lessons, learn to play the saxophone, clarinet, piano, guitar, or ukulele? What about the viola, violin, or cello? We also offer percussion, brass, and flute lessons. Let us know what you would like to learn to play. The COA welcomes students and adults alike to sign up for lessons on your preferred instrument. Lessons in the summer are more flexible, so you will work out the exact days and times that you can come with your music teacher. For more information, contact Ellen Bryant (coa@vhumc.org / 769-0123).

Library Self-Checkout
A new self-checkout cart has been placed outside of the day school area. Please swing by and check out some of our interesting titles that have been specifically chosen for kids of all ages! This cart was placed in memory of Nannette Smith.

Discovery Weekend 2019
Registration for Discovery Weekend is now open! Discovery is a jam-packed, three-day weekend of messages, worship, small group discussions, and activities designed to jump start the school year and help our students continue to make their faith their own. It is designed for high schoolers to develop leadership skills and pour into middle schoolers by leading D-Groups, sharing in messages, and in worship. Discovery is the most exciting, spirit filled, and fun weekend your student will attend all year! So come be a part of this amazing weekend August 2-4! For more information, or if you would like to volunteer, contact Alice Bell Baker (abbaker@vhumc.org / 769-0137).

Thank You for Inviting Neighbors
Thank you for putting up yard signs all over Vestavia Hills inviting our neighbors to join us for worship. We strategically planned this for pre-Easter and we had 10 first-time guest families join us for Easter! We've also had a steady stream of visitors ever since, so we want to do this again in the fall. Please save your signs and we will let you know when to put them back out. If you don't have a sign, we will distribute more for our next campaign.
A Huge Thank You
A huge thank you to all our Rise Against Hunger sponsors. We could not make this event possible without the incredible support of all of our sponsors. Thank you for supporting such an important event at VHUMC.

Boomer and Beyond Costa Rica Mission Trip
Join Jim Frazier as we travel to Costa Rica February 29 - March 8, 2020. We will be doing light construction on a church in the morning and activities with children in the afternoon. This is the perfect first mission trip. The skill level is very basic but very needed. The cost is around $1,500 per person. If you are interested in this trip please contact Jim Frazier (jfrazier@vhumc.org / 769-0126) by June 1.
Your Mountain is Calling
Adulthood looms before you like a mountain. There are so many questions, so many unknowns, and you don't yet know the way. But this is testing ground, a place where God will forge you. You will never go alone. His goodness follows you. Your mountain is calling. This illustration is featured in Adulting with JP Pokluda.

Honoring Church Membership
Some of you have wondered how we handle priority registration for Vestavia Day School and some of our events when we anticipate that available slots will fill up quickly. We always want to make sure that our faithful, active members don't miss the opportunity to participate.

Some time ago, we adopted a policy that gives priority registration to a member who has:
  • Been a member of VHUMC for at least one year.
  • Had their attendance recorded in Sunday School or the worship service pew pads 1/4th of the time.
  • Given a minimum of $1,000 a year to the church as a donation (not as payment for services).
This seems a fair measure to use in giving priority registration to our members. For those who have (or plan to have) children involved at VHUMC, we highly encourage you to register your attendance and if you contribute in cash, please use an offering envelope.

If you have questions about this policy, please contact Gary Wyatt (gwyatt@vhumc.org / 769-0108).
Ongoing Outreach
Food Pantry
Food Pantry desperately needs a new refrigerator, preferably with a top freezer. We have had one repaired but it is out again. We also have an abundant supply of bags right now. Thank you so much, but please save them for later.
