Flags and Veterans Celebrated at King County Aquatic Center | | |
The City of Federal Way proudly partnered with Soroptimist International of Federal Way to host a heartfelt celebration honoring Flag Day and Veterans Day on Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. The event brought together residents, local leaders, and veterans for a festive afternoon filled with patriotic performances, inspiring remarks, and complimentary meals for all attendees.
Mayor Jim Ferrell, joined by members of the Federal Way City Council, opened the program with a welcoming address that reflected on the significance of the American flag and the unifying spirit of Veterans Day.
“America is not defined by where you’re born, your faith, or your heritage,” Mayor Ferrell said. “You become an American when you swear to uphold the Constitution, when you commit yourself to the ideals of liberty and equality that flag represents.”
The program also included a special recognition of Retired King County Aquatic Center Director Mike Dunwiddie, honoring his years of dedicated service and lasting contributions to the community.
The City extends its gratitude to Soroptimist International of Federal Way for their partnership in creating a meaningful event that celebrated patriotism, service, and community spirit.

Our Public Works Department partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Federal Way for the annual Paint the Plow project. This has become a yearly tradition in Federal Way that invites kids from around the City to design artwork that goes on the front of City plows.
This year’s theme was “Slow Down in Work Zones.” Two designs were chosen and painted on plows by kids at the Boys & Girls Club and Teen Center. Mayor Jim Ferrell and members of the City Council were on hand last week to provide certificates to all of the kids that participated in this fun project.

| | Join Us: Federal Way Employees Launch Holiday Food Drive | | |
With the holidays nearing, more families in Federal Way are facing increasing hardship and wondering how they will put food on the table and meet other basic needs. Reduced SNAP (food assistance) benefits, combined with ongoing impacts from the federal government shutdown, have led to a growing number of households turning to local food banks for support.
In response, City of Federal Way employees are coming together to help, and we invite you to join us.
From Nov. 10-21, we are hosting a Holiday Food Drive in support of the Federal Way Senior Center and Multi-Service Center, two organizations that provide essential food and support to residents across the city.
Why This Matters
City employees care deeply about the people we serve. As food insecurity rises across Federal Way, this drive reflects our shared commitment to compassion, service, and community support. By working together, we can help ensure that no member of the Federal Way community is left without access to nutritious food during this season of giving.
Where to Donate: Donation bins will be available starting at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10 at:
- City Hall - Main Floor Lobby
- Second Floor - Near the Hylebos Conference Room
Suggested Food Donations: Shelf-stable, nutritious, and culturally inclusive foods are especially appreciated.
Visit our Food Drive webpage to learn more about how and what to donate.
