continuing Grizzly support for Jonathan Annicks
|
In 2016, Jonathan Annicks ('16) stepped out from his home to get his phone charger from the family car. Without reason, warning, or provocation, he was shot by an unknown man and is now paralyzed from the chest down. Jonathan is known to his friends and fellow Grizzlies as an adventurous, physically active guy who loves the Blackhawks (he coached youth hockey), and loves school - he is now attending DePaul University.
The Payton community has joined the effort to insure he has what he needs to face this challenge by contributing to an online crowd-sourced medical fund, the goal of which is to secure continuing medical care, physiotherapy, rehabilitative therapy, medical equipment, and other necessities to Jonathan's recovery. Please consider participating in the effort by visiting
Friends of Jonathan Annicks to make a donation.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Parents, guardians: Participate, leave your own mark at Payton
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is an invitation...an invitation to put your fingerprints on Payton. One of the seminal characteristics of the Payton experience is the immense involvement that our parents have had in the development of so many of our robust programs. Listed are a few of the many ways in which parents have been/can be involved at Payton:
- Running the scoreboard at athletic games;
- Recapping your child's athletic team's or academic club's weekly activities so we can publish them on our webpage or post to Twitter;
- Chaperoning a dance or field trip;
- Participating in development of Wellness Fair;
- Connecting your company, a family member or associate with a teacher or class;
- Creating a paid or unpaid internship for a Payton student at your company;
- Using your talents to offer a one-time or ongoing Enrichment or a one-time or ongoing Seminar.
How do you do this? Reach out to a teacher (e-mail addresses are posted on our website). Zap an e-mail to our remarkable Assistant Principal, David Adamji (
ddadamji@cps.edu), if interested in participating in the Enrichment or Seminar. Emails for coaches are listed on our athletics page or contact our Athletics Director, George Klupchak (
gklupchak@cps.edu). Visit
FOP's volunteer page on our website. If you have an idea but don't know how to germinate it on campus, call direct (773-534-0039) or e-mail me (
tpdevine@cps.edu). Let's figure out a way to enjoin your talents with the mission of Payton.
Your time and skills are critical to our students' growth. By participating in the Payton experience, you will be satiating yourself - there are a lot of really dynamic people-students, faculty, and parents who are exciting people with whom develop a small, medium, or large program - and underscoring to your own child(ren) the value of selflessness, volunteerism and commitment to family. We welcome you to join us.
A full-throated, wholehearted thank you to the many, many parents who have and who continue to aid our people and programs. Your efforts and talents help to make us a unique and effective place in which our students grow.
Go Grizzlies!

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Commmunicating with teachers about missing grades
Dr. Erica Bauer, Director of Student Engagement
Hello Grizzly parents and guardians,
We believe it is important to support students in advocating for themselves, an invaluable skill for navigating school and life. To support students in communicating with teachers about grades, the italicized message, below, was emailed to all students and faculty. I think it also is important to share this message with you:
It is important to regularly check Student Portal to know where you stand in your classes. It also is important that grades are regularly entered so that you can know where you stand.
Teachers use grades as a primary way to communicate how you are progressing in the class. Our faculty are committed to giving you timely and effective feedback to partner with you on your educational journeys. Therefore, our faculty are committed to input grades for meaningful assignments at least once every 3 blue/orange cycles. Thus, all students should have had their first assignment grades entered by the second week of school.
What to do if a grade is not updated?
Send a professionally-worded email to your teacher expressing a desire to know where you stand in a class and asking when the grades for a given assignment will be entered. A template of such an email is below. Of course, you can adapt the language as necessary. You also can have this conversation in person.
Dear [Teacher], I hope this email finds you well. I appreciate all that you do for me and other Payton students. I am writing because I would like to know how I am progressing in your class and noticed that the most recent assignment/assessment has not yet been entered into Student Portal. I understand you are very busy. Can you please let me know when I can expect the grade to be entered? Sincerely, [Your Name].
If grades are still not entered or you do not receive a response within 48 hours: Forward your email to the department chair with a note of explanation.
Dear [Department Chair], Recently, I reached out to [Teacher] regarding my grades and have not received an update. Please advise. Sincerely, [Your name].
Science - Mr. Silva (mmsilvia@cps.edu)
Math - Mr. Galson (sdgalson@cps.edu)
Social Studies - Mr. Weiss (amweiss@cps.edu)
English - Ms. Catlin (kacatlin@cps.edu)
World Language - Ms. Gonzalez (agonzalez12@cps.edu)
PE/Health - Ms. Bertoni (ambertoni@cps.ed)
Visual and Performing Arts - Ms. Guizzetti (pguizzetti@cps.edu)
If the above steps are not enough to remedy the situation, please forward your emails to edbauer@cps.edu and ddadamji@cps.edu and one of us will follow-up. Consider adding your parent/guardian on that email.
These are general guidelines. If you feel that you, as the parent/guardian, need to take a different course of action based on the situation, we are in full support and agreement. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please contact me at
edbauer@cps.edu
.
Mark your calendars for the next We Are Payton Parents event, "How Can I Tell if Something's Really Wrong?" from 6:15-7:30PM, Wednesday, Nov. 29.
We are different. We are one. We are Payton.

Music & Art News
From the Band Room
Auditions for concert band/chamber strings were held early in October and work has started on the Winter Concert music.
The Payton Jazz Orchestra has a full schedule with its first performance at Payton's Open House. The group has once again been invited to perform at the Museum of Science and Industry on Tuesday, Nov. 21. The audience will be the volunteers who helped the museum set up its annual Christmas Around the World display. Remarkably, this will be the band's 14th appearance at this event.
The Instrumental Music Department will present its Winter Concert on Fri. Dec. 8 in Payton's Recital Hall. The concert begins at 7PM, and admission is $5 ($3 for senior citizens and students with valid school ID).
From the Choir Room
The Concert Choir had its fall retreat earlier this school year at the home of the Sudworth family, whose daughters Rebecca and Hannah are Payton alumni. The choir spent the afternoon getting better acquainted while enjoying the family's event space. Members of the Concert Choir then competed last month at the Regional/All-State auditions at suburban Carl Sandberg High School. The individual blind auditions included performing in four different rooms for four different judges. Students were scored on scales and triads, sight reading, and repertoire excerpts. Congratulations to Payton's 10 Regional qualifiers: Raven Foster ('19), Lizzy Fraser ('19), Zach Gee ('20), Grace Kleinaitis ('18), Abby Rooney ('18), Jacqueline Switzer ('20), Bibiana Torres ('18), Alexis Walters ('18), Kate Wehrenberg ('19), Morgan Ziegelski ('20). They will be singing at Elmhurst College on Saturday, Nov. 18, in a regional choir of more than 250 students.
Payton's Concert Choir was one of three high school choirs last month invited to a performance by Roosevelt University's Chorale. The concert concluded with a collaborative piece including the high school choirs.

It was founded in 1965 and sends over 500 high school students each year from all over the US to be fully immersed in the cultural and language of a Latin America country while working on a sustainable community-based project. During their time abroad, students live with local host families to strengthen their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences.
AMIGOS offers program options for different age groups:
- Current 8th and 9th graders: Discover AMIGOS is a two-week introduction to cultural immersion and service learning. Students travel together in a mentor-facilitated group throughout Nicaragua, supporting conservation and community development projects alongside local communities.

Lycée Marguérite Yourcenar Bi-annual Exchange
|
|
| Payton, Lycée Marguérite Yourcenar celebrate our 8th Bi-annual Exchange (2003-2017). |
"Foreign exchanges are stressful experiences - the process of welcoming someone of a completely different culture, nationality, and language into your home as if they were a member of your family is unnerving to say the least. But at the same time, they are beautiful and awakening events that simultaneously expose you to new worldviews, people and opinions that reveal the essentially human elements we all share. During the two weeks I hosted Jeff (properly Jean-Francois) in Chicago, I gradually broke through the barriers of language, nationality, and culture to discover the true person behind the veil of foreignness. Although much of his stay was spent explaining American cultural minutia, by the end of two weeks I felt I knew Jeff as if he was my lifelong friend." Micah Weese, '18
"One of my favorite things to do throughout the city is to go get food. I loved taking Mathilde out to my favorite restaurants and cafes in Chicago and it was great to see her reaction when she'd say "this is so delicious" or "this is the best (particular type of food) I've ever had". I really felt like I was sharing a part of my experience living in Chicago when I took her to these places. ... I
cannot wait to get to spend more time with the group in France and hopefully in the future, even after the exchange is over. I am grateful for this experience and the ones that are to come from it!" Arlene Viciedo, '18
"When Leonie arrived at Gate B at O'Hare, I immediately started experiencing my hometown of Chicago as I imagined she might. Suddenly, the gate area smelled aggressively like McDonald's, all of the signs were in blaring English, and I began to reevaluate my surroundings as an outsider looking in. The next two weeks were filled with similar experiences -- I found out quickly that the things I took for granted were completely foreign to my corres. ... I visited Chinatown, Hyde Park, Navy Pier and tons of other neighborhoods I rarely explore, probably walking about the city more than I have in any other two-week school period up to now." Payton Stratford Festival Trip
On Oct. 6, 22 students and four chaperones departed for the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Canada. Over three days, students immersed themselves in world-class theatre, attending four plays: the musical Guys and Dolls, Moliere's satire Tartuffe, Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night and Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy of manners The School for Scandal. In addition to taking in shows, students had the opportunity to tour the Festival's massive costume and prop warehouse and had a guided, behind-the-scenes tour of the Festival's main theatre. The group spent its spare time exploring downtown Stratford's boutique shops, cafes and restaurants, and ended the trip with a cookout and stories around the campfire.
