November 2024 e-Grapevine

TRUSTEES CORNER

Welcome to November! As we transition into this beautiful yet brisk month, it's essential to embrace the changes that come with the dropping temperatures and the approach of winter. One of the first steps in preparing your home for the colder months is to ensure that you are equipped for any challenges that winter may bring. This includes practical measures, such as installing mailbox protectors to shield against snow and ice accumulation, which can cause damage to your mailbox and hinder your mail delivery.

November is not just about preparing our homes; it’s also a vital time for civic engagement. Residents of Concord Township should mark their calendars for November 5th, a significant day for participating in local elections. This is your chance to voice your opinions and influence the decision-making processes that affect your community and daily life. Make sure you are informed about the candidates and issues on the ballot, as every vote counts in shaping the future of our township.

As we enter the heart of the holiday season, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and crime prevention. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department emphasizes the importance of securing your home as the festivities begin. Simple yet effective measures include installing secondary locks on doors and windows, keeping valuables out of sight from prying eyes, and ensuring that your outdoor lighting is functioning optimally. Brightly lit exteriors deter potential intruders and enhance the overall safety of your home.

Be vigilant about unexpected visitors at your door, particularly during this time of year when holiday scams tend to rise. It’s wise to remain cautious and verify the identity of any strangers before opening your door. Additionally, be aware of fraudulent charities that may seek donations during the holiday season; always research and confirm the legitimacy of organizations before contributing.

If you plan to travel during the holidays, take proactive steps to safeguard your home. Enlist the help of a trusted friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your property while you're away. You might also consider using timers for your indoor lights to create the illusion that someone is home, further enhancing your home’s security.

Lastly, as we reflect on the significance of this month, let us take a moment to honor our Veterans. November serves as a poignant reminder to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the soldiers who have served our country, both past and present. Their courage, dedication, and sacrifices form the very foundation of our nation’s strength and freedom. Join in commemorating their service, whether through participating in local events, attending ceremonies, or simply taking a moment to acknowledge the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. Your appreciation goes a long way in recognizing the invaluable contributions of our Veterans.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Fire Prevention lesson

From the Chief’s Office

Fire Prevention Week is 102 years old. Established in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), it commemorates the Great Chicago Fire and serves as a reminder of the devastating effects of fires on communities. The week encourages individuals and families to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their homes from fire hazards.

The Fire Department spends the entire month of October carrying safety messages and safety education into Concord’s schools. We concentrate our effort on the young children in preschool, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. This age group represents one of the highest groups for fire deaths and injury. Our Firefighters, engines, and ambulances made over 20 visits to our schools, delivering safety messages, hats and badges and tours of our equipment. We also had 6 school field trips to the new Fire Station #1.

Along with the focus on school children, throughout October fire prevention:

  • Taught CPR classes for residents, local business and teens involved in the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Explorers program
  • Presented career information at Fire Station #1 to Riverside High School career tech students
  • Provided paramedic coverage for 2 Riverside football games
  • Installed safety seats during the Goddard Schools car seat program
  • Installed residential lock boxes
  • Assisted residents with their smoke alarm checks, battery replacement and installation.
  • Participated in Concord Rec Department’s Movie Night and Fall Festival

In total we reached approximately 1,880 students, teachers, parents and community adults throughout October.

Thanksgiving

Cooking causes half (52%) of all reported home fires and nearly two of every five (36%) home fire injuries, and it is a leading cause of home fire deaths (17%).

On Thanksgiving Day alone, an estimated 1,610 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments in 2022, reflecting a 399 percent increase over the daily average.

Please visit our fire prevention webpage for Thanksgiving cooking do’s and don'ts and more safety tips to keep your family fire safe during the holiday season.

Concord Twp. Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff's Office

Following the Township’s Fall Fest held here at Fire Station #1 last Saturday, we presented our final Fire Department Informational Talk. During this series of presentations, we held some enlightening conversations with residents who shared their perceptions and expectations of the fire service. We shared information on the Fire Department’s history, funding, staffing, equipment and expenses. We reviewed the levy proposal and discussed how the levy is critical to the sustainability of current department operations.

If you missed these informational events, please take the time to review a synopsis of our materials and presentation on our fire department webpage.

We encourage every Concord resident to exercise their right to vote.
