The OLMA Overview -- September 14, 2017
Week Two is here, and we are in full swing! Next week is a big one, with picture day and Back-to-School Night (BTS) on Tuesday. We will begin BTS in the auditorium at 6:30 PM. You will the opportunity to meet and hear from Ms. Valore, as well as check in with teachers and staff. Before you leave that night, be sure and see Mrs. Kinkade for an OPEN HOUSE yard sign. We need your help planting them all over South Jersey.

This month will end with a bang as we hold our ROCK 'N RAISE party on Saturday, September 30. The band is awesome and your ticket also includes dinner and beer. We have many people (parents, staff, local businesses) working hard to make the night a blast, so I hope to see you there. If you're looking for a reason to get out, this is a good one. Tickets are only $25 and are available online or by calling the office. You'll find more information below.

On the heels of that event is our Broadway Trip on October 4 and Communion Breakfast on October 8. Check out all the details below. I'll end on a note of congratulations to our fall athletes for a great start to the fall season. Go Villagers! -- Mrs. Coyle
Student Spotlight
Meet Katie Burrichter

OLMA's Katie Burrichter is well known for her performance on the Volleyball court -- a place she feels completely at home. Katie began playing Club volleyball in the fourth grade. She also wanted to play for her school, but St. Michael the Archangel Regional School didn't have a team. "That's when I first met Coach Fred (Marcano)," said Katie. "He introduced volleyball at St. Michael's and formed our first team."

Little did she know that Coach Fred would re-enter her life in high school as OLMA's head coach for volleyball -- a position he started in this summer. "Our team is making a lot of progress so far this year," said Katie. "Coach has introduced new techniques, plus we have a lot of new freshmen players." The team also has some great leadership in co-captains, Katie and Morgan Hagerty.

Katie's hard work and leadership were rewarded this past weekend as she was named MVP Libero for the whole tournament. When asked about that honor she said she was surprised. "I didn't expect it, but my adrenaline and energy level were both pretty high that day. They were a tough team and I wanted to be every where and get every ball." And that she did.

This is Katie's third year playing varsity volleyball for OLMA, something she has in common in with her two sisters, Nicole, OLMA '14 and Ashley, OLMA '16. When it came time to choose a high school, Katie said she remembers having options. "My parents let me decide which high school felt best," she said. "I had already spent so much time at OLMA with my sisters that it already felt like home. We're all girls, we can totally be ourselves. I have a Spiderman notebook and no one cares. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable carrying it around anywhere else."

Academically, Katie is a fan of Chemistry and History and is considering attending college to be a Chemical Engineer. She hasn't made any decisions yet on schools, but after attending OLMA's college tours, has put Loyola and Catholic University on the consideration list. In addition to great academic programs, both schools have women's volleyball teams. Any school would be lucky to have you, Katie. Good luck on the rest of your season!

Make Like a Tree and Leaf!
The Class of 2021 has officially joined the ranks of OLMA students who will never look at a tree the same way again. Pictured here are members of Mrs. Coppinger's Honors Biology class on day one of the Leaf Project. They begin their search on campus for samples of the dozens of leaf varieties they will learn about this semester. If it sounds a little tedious, that's because it is, but in a good way. The Leaf Project is a fabulous introduction to Biology and a project that most students remember years later as one of their favorites.
